Practical Photography
Digital SLR Photography
Amateur Photography (every now and then)
Also and advocate of National Geographic.

I guess i deserved the first two replies - it will teach me to not be more clear in my question. As a newbie to the hobbie and forum i am after some serious advice although i did LOL at the first responses.

I am subscribed to "Digital Camera". I absolutely love it and I think that it has brought a lot into my photography. I learn something new from every issue.

I would recommend it to anyone really, that has not had much experience with photography!

As a newbie to the hobbie is there one in particular you would recommend for a starter on this journey of DSLR ownership

I subscribe to Photoplus, DSLR User and am going to do the Tesco subscription with Practical Photography.

Digital SLR photography is a great monthly and usually has 5-6 new tasks to try out each month .

Practical Photography, Digital Photo and Digital SLR User Magazine.

All have taught me a great deal about photography, love them!

Cheers all - lots to go on - i do like the idea of getting a subscription as i think its like a monthly or bimonthly injection of new ideas and inspiration.

None at all.

If you're just starting out then they are useful. Amateur Photographer and Digital Photo spring to mind as being the best in my view. But you get far better and more relevant info on here than any magazine. But after a while you'll notice that they do tend to repeat themselves quite regularly, almost by season. Not worth it at all once you've mastered the basics.

It depends on the kind of images you are wanting to create - for me, it's Vanity Fair and Vogue because I bring fashion into my portraits a lot. And then Photo Pro magazine (but I do have an interest in getting that magazine ;)

'Digital Camera' and 'Practical Photography' are the two I get more often than not, but I can go months without buying a copy...

Perhaps there'd be more use to the thread if someone created a poll of the ones available in the shops???

Practical Photography for me and Amateur Photographer when I see something interesting...

Have a Practical Photography subscription bought for me by my other half for my birthday

Just took out subscription for Digital SLR Photography £5 for five issues just to see what it's like.

Amateur photography and Practical photography, but not regulary only when something of interest to me

Black & White Photography

Absolutely agree with the above. For the first year I bought most of the magazines but you soon realise that between all the publications, they print the same stuff year after year. In my opinion, once you've got the basics sorted, you'd be much better off spending the money on a half decent course.

I think the best advice is to read them like crazy for the first few months but I wouldn't bother getting an annual subscription because by month 12 it'll all seem horribly familiar. The best ones are the ones that focus on photographers and their work rather than too many 'how to' features.

I read pretty much every issue now of the British Journal of Photography (weekly) and Black & White Photography (monthly), and about one issue in three of Amateur Photographer (weekly).

If you like that kind of thing I think a lot of people rate Outdoor Photography as well but once you've got an understanding of the basics there's probably no need to be reading Practical Photography and the rest.
