Looking for a decent quality macro for my D90. I can't afford the Sigma or Nikkor 105mm so was thinking about the Sigma 70mm then perhaps an extender later? Are there any other macro's that you would highly recommend. Not interested in the Tamrons much as they don't get great reviews.

Thanks

Thom Hogans thoughts on the 90mm Tamron, bottom of this page LINK

Blimey! That's a pretty bold statement for the Tammy. I do like Tamron lenses and using MF wouldn't be a problem as it will be used in my little studio most of the time.

One of this months mags has done a test on a range of macro's and the Tammy didn't do too well. Perhaps i had better look at some example images.

Thanks

I have never seen a bad report on it, I would take most magazine reviews with a pinch of salt, Tamron probably did not take out much advertising space ;)

Here are the user reviews from Fred Miranda LINK averages 9.4 / 10.

And some sample images (and comments) on pbase LINK

It would be my choice if I did not have the Nikon 105

Nikon 60mm AF-d f/2.8.

Brilliant, light, good AF, used you'll get one for £200 or less

You should be able to get a used Nikon Micro - Nikkor AF 105mm f/2.8D

Anone have much experience with the Sigma 70mm macro?

What do you actually want to use the macro lens for?

Some of the shorter macro lenses offer superb IQ and double up nicely as portrait lenses (I loved my old Sigma 50mm) however they're not much use for insects as you have to get so close to them that they will almost certainly not hang around.

A lot of people go for something around the 100mm mark as they're a nice compromise. Not too pricey in general, pretty light for carrying around, focal length that could be used for portraits. I don't think that there are any bad lenses in this category. One that hasn't been mentioned is the Tokina 100mm which is worth a look.

If you really like insects, the Sigma 150mm or 180mm are worth a look. I have the latter but would probably suggest that the 150mm would be a better choice as the 180mm is far too big to lug around on the off chance of seeing something. Both are optically superb though.

Mostly for flowers in my little studio. When I had Canon I had the 60mm f2.8 which I thought was a stunning lens. If I had Canon I would go for one of them in a jiffy. If the 70mm is as good then I'll get that and use tubes if I want to get super close.

I just bought a nikon 40mm macro to add to my 200mm, 105mm and 60mm set.

Got to say if you do not need distance the 40mm is one seriously sharp lens and good value at a little of £200 new!

How sharp....

:lol:Think I would want more than 40mm for hot shots Graeme.
To the op the nikon 60mm afs is a razor sharp lens also and within your budget.

hi andy, i would go for a second hand 105mm micro 2.8D £300 should get you a good one. It really is a cracking lens, just read the reviews, it will work great with the d90 manual and autofocus.
