Which second hand macbook should i be looking at?
ok i buying a mac soon (after a year of saving:D) and im not sure what to get

my first option is a aluminum unibody macbook with 2.2ghz and 2gb of ram for about £480-£550. with that id have about £300-£370 to spend on some new glass and maybe a flash as well or should i get

a macbook pro with a 2.4ghz processor and 4gb of ram for about £650-£750 and not getting any glass?

what do you guys think?

If you don't need the 'pro' spec then you could just buy an extra 2GB RAM if required from Crucial.com.

hmm good point, i wont the laptop to last a long time, thats why i was thinking the pro + i would be doing fairly haevy photoshoping on it and a bit of film editing ( using final cut pro) so im starting to think the pro might be better, advantege with the noramll macbook is that i wont have to wait anylonger to get it,
thank you for the website
Jack

Ideally, you want lots of RAM and a fast hard drive for photo and video editing. I would suggest 4GB RAM be the minimum which should be fine for photo editing, but video editing will use the hard drive a lot more. Have you considered a desktop machine like an iMac or a Windows PC? You'll get more bang for your buck than with a portable system unless it really needs to be portable.

yea portability is important as i will take it to school, (our school comps run on 2ghz and if your lucky u get one thats been juiced up to 2gb of ram, most of the time you have to put up with one though, so i mean everythings gotta be a plus when you look at it like that :)

Have you read his wording, sounds like a right one to me, "must pay within an hour or I can't buy any more " :cuckoo::cuckoo:

I run a Macbook with 4gig ram and I upgraded my Hard drive as soon as I got it. Didn't go for the Pro version so I saved a few quid and got more memory and a bigger drive with change left over. The aluminium chasis would be nice, but to be honest my "plastic" Macbook works great and its fast enough for everything I throw at it.

Looks like the seller has previously traded in low value goods to build up feedback. I wouldn't touch this with a barge pole.

was my feeling as well, shame if its true would be amazing.

Paul, my brain says you're right but my heart tells me I've fallen in love with aluminum ones. And as i will be taking to and from school and from house to house the added durability would be a bonuses, might just wait till the summer and get a macbook pro with 4gb ram, who knows by then the 13inch ones with the i5 processors might have fallen in price :)

i used to have a 2.4 macbook white great machine. The bonus with the newer unibody pros is going up to 8gb of ram which until recent used to be around £400 now its £60-80.

As someone who uses final cut pro all the time I wouldn't dream of using it on a 2.4 processor with 4gb of ram unless it's a quad core, which for second hand i doubt it would be.

I use an iMac i5 quad core 2.8 with 8gb of ram and it does a good job in FCP on full hd video, but my even my old iMac with 3.06ghz core 2 duo with 4gb ram used to take FOREVER to render a movie that was like 30 mins long.

But if you have patience then, i spose you can work around it

yea tbh i don't have any need to make massive films, it just would be nice as i am looking at getting a video camera in the future (or an d-slr that does good video) all i would need is something that supports it, doesn't need to run very fast but thank you for the advise :)

I've got the 2010 MacBook Pro 13 (the cheapest one, so 2.4) and I never notice any problems with speed when using aperture, iMovie etc, and I'm working with some pretty big files.

Be realistic about what you want. I've got a computer with an i3, SSD and 4GB of RAM - I don't think I've ever even used half the RAM or ever hit 100% on the processor usage. It's refreshing because all my other computers from the stone age struggle just to load YouTube.

you could save a little by getting the plastic white Mac and putting in as much RAM as you could afford. Unless you're really going to hammer the movie making I shouldn't think speed would be a problem.

It may be worth looking at the Ali versions if you are going to be travelling a lot, i have had two white ones damaged at the case hinges form pressure when travelling.

Also the final re-sale value could be worth looking at to see if ali holds it money better and is worth the extra initial outlay.

Well the Macbook went for £465 and have a look at his last feedback score, definitely a dodgy seller.

ok sounds good, my friend should be giving my a copy of his cs5 (with serials so its all legal) and FCP so it might be a bit heavier but if your having no problem i can hardly see these programs completely killing it

TBH half the reason for loving macs and apple is there design and iv proper fallen in love with the aluminum ones so i think I'm gonna just get one of them, n I'm really not planning to hammer the movie making, would just be nice to make somthing when i get a slr capable of video
