i know i have had a couple of topics regarding different lenses. looking at getting one this weekend hopefully (for a birthday pressie off the other half)

the ones i have looked at were a Sigma 28-70 F2.8 or a Nikon Nikkor 55-200 VR

i did have the latter after i first got my D40x but sold it on to get the 70-300, it was ok i though but not so sure how often i would use it having a 100-300 F4

seen the 28-70 cheaply i think but are they good lenses?

would it make a good "walkabout"

If you're looking for a "walkabout" lens, wouldn't the Sigma 17-70 mm HSM be a better choice because of the wider end? Or do you need the F2.8?
The Nikkor 18-135 mm could be good for that too, but I'm not sure how it compares overall to the Sigmas.

I don't really think you'd use the 55-200 VR much if you have a 100-300 F4.

thats what i been thinking

i use the 18-135 now but though something maybe lower light will do the trick or maybe faster than what i have now

i did look at the 17-70 but alot of people said it was soft and generally not the best

what about this as a replacement for the nikon?

Sigma 18-125mm f/3.5-5.6 DC (Nikon AFD)

The tamron 28-75mm seems to get better test scores and have a better reputation than the sigma 28-70mm. I think the price is about the same.

Whether they are good walkabouts seems to depend on whether you can live with a 28mm wide end. 45-110mm efl seems pretty weird to me and in that price range I think I'd prefer the tamron 17-50mm.

no idea not looked

looking for a couple of lenses, one later this year (12-24) and another walk about lens

the 28-70 seemed ideal but not sure it would be wide enough no its been mentioned
