Hi, I'm new here so sorry if this is in the wrong section. I recently got a Nikon D3300 and I've been using it a lot however, I'm somewhat limited by the lack of a zoom lens so...
Tamron AF 70-300mm F/4-5.6 Di LD Macro 1:2 Nikon+Motor or Sigma 70-300mm f/4 - f/5.6 APO. These are the main two lenses in my price range. Which would you consider to be the better buy? Or are there any other lenses worth considering?

Thanks
Joe

Hi Joe,

Welcome to TP.

For long zooms you ideally want the vr or vc ones, unless you are always going to be using a tripod.

The Tamron 70-300 vc is a good lens, or the Nikon 70-300 vr used.

If you don't need the 300, then a cheaper option is the 55-200vr.

Otherwise save up and get the Nikon or Tamron vr one.

I up to recently had the Nikon 70-300 VR lens which I now regret getting rid of. You should be able to get a good used one from a camera shop. there should be one in you kind of price range

Nikon 70-300VR is a good value lens, and would recommend that.

Specifically, of the two you mention the Sigma is a fair bit better than the Tamron but the other lenses already mentioned are better still.

By the way, these are called telephoto lenses (or more specifically telephoto zoom), even a wide angle lens can be a zoom if the focal length changes :)

+1 for the Nikon 70-300 VR which is my go to longish zoom on both my full frame and DX nikons.

Thanks for all you opinions, anyone got a Nikon 20050 AF-S DX NIKKOR 55-200 mm VR II? This seems like a good lens from my rookie experience and, I don't think dropping to 200mm would be a problem for me.

I had the original VR version of that lens and it was great, it's a very good compliment to the kit lens.

I'm very impressed with my 70-300 tamron lens and the price is great too. Very good reviews too.

Ravinder,

What Tamron do you have the VC or Non VC one?

Joe, I also had the 55-200 vr and was not a bad lens for starting off. I did try a friend 70-300 vr and that was a lot better, however more expensive.

I have the VC one. It works very well. Better then my Nikon one. A lot faster and more stable I feel.

I get great results from my 70-300, at a great price too :)

The Tamron 70-300mm VC lens is a cracking lens, i still have mine as a walkabout lens when i don't fancy lugging my 200-500mm about

On the flip side, the non VC Tamron 70-300 is terrible, or at least my copy was, very soft at the long end, i even sent it back to Tamron to have a look at it, and they said it was perfectly fine

I have had 2 copies now of the 70-300mm VC (regretted selling my 1st copy when i bought a 300mm f4, so soon bought another copy), and both have been very good indeed, and plenty sharp enough at the long end
