If you can try and get the Nikon 70-300 vr which is better than both those ones and shouldn't be out your budget.

Most reports say the Tamron is better than the nikon 70-300VR although I've only ever used the nikon version.

I'd vote for the Nikon also, a cracking lens for the price. Some good second hand deals about, although the best ones get snapped up quickly.

I've had both the Nikon VR and the Tamron VC. Very little to chose in IQ terms but I did find the Nikon to be faster to obtain focus and to be more consistent. I kept the Nikon and sold the Tamron but like I say, very little between them and either one would be an excellent choice.

Just to be clear, the Nikon people are talking about isn't the one linked to in the first post which is the 55-300.
