I have booked a holiday to Florida for early August, I will be taking a DSLR with a 24-105 for general stuff, but what long/zoom lens would you recommend for birds/wildlife out there? bearing in mind that it will have to go in hand luggage ( don't want to put glass in the hold). I have a 500mm f4 is and a pelicase but I feel this might be too heavy to cart around. I may hire something but I am undecided on what to do.

It's not light, but it will fit into your hand luggage... 70-200 f/2.8. You can pick up the non-IS version up now for cheap. There's also the f/4 version to consider (much smaller and lighter). Anything other than that then you're probably getting too big and too heavy.

the 500mm f4 is a big lens. will be very good for pictures but i wouldn't want to cart it around, maybe take it if you think your going to be in hides or stationary for long periods of time. if it was me i would rent the canon 100-400 or the sigma 50-500. both have a good focal range and you are more likely to take them out for a walk because they will not pull your arm off :D
