I have recently started to take photo's of my working dogs using a canon 70-200 f4 (not is), I am pleased with most of the images, however I feel that a 2.8 would suit me better for when the light in woodland is challenging. I have checked the ex if and most shots are around the 180-200 mm mark. I would also like to have a dabble in horse event photography. What are the best options, the canon 200mm F2.8 L non is prime, or sigma 70-200 f2.8 hsm os. The new mk2 canon 70-200 is out of my current budget

OK the prime will be lighter.
The zoom will give you versatility, but really you should try em out and then decide.
 
I know the MK2 is out of your budget but what about the MK1 second hand.

I would go with the zoom too as like said more versatile and you are looking to do different things with the lens as opposed to something specific

Thanks Spike, will see what's going and at what price. Tempted to wait a while and sell a few bits to make the shortfall up for the MK11.
Got the chance to try Sigma and Canon side by side in a fortnight.

If you can wait a bit longer and save the extra dosh, then I would strongly recommend the MKII canon version.. It really is as good as the reviews say.
The MKII is a weighty beast though. On your 7d (1.6 crop) it will have an effective focal range of approx 112-320 @ f2.8. Now that is not to be sniffed at.

I'm not sure if you use the battery grip on the 7d, but with the MKII lens fitted, you may find that by having the grip fitted, the balance of the combo is better.
 
You sound like you are int he same position as me Steve, i end up going out with the wife at weekends to events, i'm also after a 70-200 2.8, they are just a little pricey! Worth saving up for though, even if it takes a year, its a lens that will last for ages.
 
I treated myself to the 70-200 MkII at the start of the year, and it is superb for dog photography; definitely worth saving for
 
I should have said, that is on my 7D (ungripped). I don't find it big or heavy - it is about the same size and weight as my 100-400. The 70-200 MkII on the 7D is a superb combination for fast moving dogs - at times I feel guilty as it just seems too easy!
 
I had a similar dilemma and went for the canon 70-200 f4 non is. You could save yourself a lot of money.

This lens is super sharp even at f4, the sigma can be a bit soft at 2.8 so for pin sharp images you'll end up opening up a stop anyway.

It's light, so easy to handle, preventing fatigue which can impact on shots.

If your shooting dogs, horses etc, you'll be at a fast shutter speed so IS isn't really a factor.

F4 gives a bit of a margin for error regarding depth of field.

Modern cameras can cope with a stops worth of higher ISO, so not a big deal.

If money was no option I'd go for a canon 70-200 2.8 IS, but I don't think it would have a significant impact on the images I'd get, or number of keepers.

Thanks for all the sound advice.

Decided to take up the 235 quid cash back and I have ordered myself the canon mk2.
Will be here Friday.

Hi Tug,

I have a grip, will see how it handles on Friday when it gets delivered. Will look at trying it out at a local rugby match this weekend. See whose playing around ponte and wakey.

Tug, not got a club. Just something I am wanting to try. Played a lot of rugby a good few years back, so I do have an interest, I'm a Fev lad so its in the blood.lol. Thought it would be ideal to try out the new lens. Slight change now as I am going upto Hawes after Red Squirrels

Hope you got some great shots, i'm sure you will have. think there's quite a few matches on down at the rovers ground this weekend,
hopefully the Red Squirrels are out, but will be definitely having at go at Rugby (hobby only.lol)
