Hi iam at a stage now where i want to purchase a 70-200 lens and maybe a 1.4 converter to go with my canon 50d now here is the dilema i have the max budget of £900 and i want a good all round lens that i can use for close motorsport in the summer months and all round photography as well all year round and i would like some sort of is if possible i know its a tall order i have two options in mind but any opinions and suggestions would be a great help by the way all the photos i do are for myself its just a hobby
hope someone can help:thinking:

How about a 100-400? That has IS and I guess the telephoto bit would be good for motorsport? You can add on some extension tubes in the summner months and get close to some flora and fauna.

Thats one lens i had not thought of bit out of my price range new maybe a good used one ? i was looking to go down the sigma 70-200 2.8 and a 2x converter as most of my motorsport has been shot at 200mm or less with a sigma 70-300 but a 2.8 would help me more in low light
any more ideas please

I doubt the 70-200 and a 2x will be any good to honest. IQ will go out the window. If you search on here i think you'll find the only 70-200 any use with a 2x is the new Canon Mk2 IS one and thats about £1600 ish.

How about waiting a few months and going for the new 70-300L IS lens that was announced a few weeks ago - currently £1500 but should come down in a few months.....

Personally I've never been impressed with any of the 70-200mm lenses and a TC, especially the 2x TC. On their own the canon 70-200mm lens (f4 or f2.8) is a fantastic lens, I hear good things about the MKII f2.8 version, but just not willing to shell out the money just to prove that its better than my MKI version when I have the both versions of the 300mm in my kit bag as well.

For your budget I would go for the sigma 100-300mm f4, ok no IS, but you don't use IS for action photography, constant f4 through the range, 100-300mm zoom covering the range you want, £800 at warehouse Ex, I assume if you shop around you'll find it cheaper, a great lens, reasonable fast optics f4, does take a 1.4x TC with some success if you use it in the right conditions, personally the better option than the sigma 70-200 f2.8

Personally I don't think the 70-300mm f4.5-5.6 L is going to be any good and rather on the expensive side even though its a L series lens, probably would have to wait a while for its price to drop where I would consider it a worth while purchase

How about upgrading the camera? Get a 7d you'll get faster focus, faster fps, better high iso? You could even sell your current 50d to help pay for it?
£900 will probably get you a second hand canon 70-200 2.8 is but that wont be great with a 2x
