Yes
My sister has decided to get married and it will be happening next year. She's not paying for a official photographer and asked if I would do it for her.

I am a total amateur and explained the potential pitfalls of me doing it.

I said I would as long as she hires me a lens for the occasion.

The question is which one would be most suited to shooting a wedding? It will be an informal affair all done at my parents property so no church to contend with.

I have at the moment;

50mm 1.8
Tamron 18-150mm
Canon EF-S 18-55mm kit lens

So over to you and your constructive suggestions. The body would be a 20D.

Canon 17-55mm f/2.8 and maybe hire a flashgun like the 430EX II from somewhere like Lenspimp or lensesforhire. Really you could do it with the kit lens probably, but nice glass if someone else is paying can't be turned down.

The flash is a good call, but I would think about a 70-200 L, just my opinion...

The 70-200 is a good option too if you use the 18-55mm for the wider shots. The only worry would be if the 20D gives up the ghost on the day it's not exactly like you can ask everyone to come back tomorrow.

It's a fair point, can you borrow another camera as backup?

Also +1 for the reliability of the camera? Not specifically the 20d, but I would think any big event (not nessessarily weddings) needs a backup of almost everything.

Spare cards, spare batteries, spare camera bodies. You really don't want to put anything down to chance.

From what I see on the forum a lot of people use a 70-200 2.8 as well as a shorter fast lens? See if you can get her to hire you 2? ;)

I had the same set up (friend asking for a favour)..!

I hired in the 70-200 is usm 2.8 (lenspimp 3 day hire £50 and amazing company), and had my standard lenses as well, my other idea was to ask a friend to come along with her Dslr and have a shoot, at least if mine went tits up i had something..!

Dont forget Charger, batteries, Cards or something to back the camera up on too.

Flash is a must, Take extra batteries for this also.

and sit back push the button and enjoy

p.s. its hard work, harder than you will ever imagine..

Got that covered already, my iPhone 4 will be in my pocket, just in case!

On a serious note though I'm going to ask a friend of mine if I can borrow his 5d for the day.

With regards to the recs for the 70-200 how would this fair on my body with the cropped sensor? 70 x 1.6 would make it quite long surely?

5d would be lovely. to be honest, I would ask the friend along to help as surely you need to be in the shots too for some of them!

The 70-200 is quite long on a crop, but great for candid shots, although the 17-55mm would always be my first choice on a crop. The 5D as a back up might be handy to stick the 50mm f/1.8 on it. Although with all this talk it doesn't sound like you'll get to enjoy your sisters wedding too much which is a shame.

If you can borrow the 5D then I personally would recommend the 24-70/2.8 and 70-200/2.8 having used them both yesterday for my cousins wedding  honestly I'm not sure that 70-200 would be that useful on a crop for the wedding other than for the aforementioned candids and those in reality are not the most important shot's at most weddings it's the formal and the ceremony shots

On a crop to me it would have to be the 17-55/2.8
