Hiya
Sorry if this question has been asked a thousand time before. Have tried your search engine but came up with nothing.
I hope this post is in the right place, if not please feel free to move it, cheers.
I recently bought a Canon 600d with a kit lens and I was looking to purchase a new all round lens but being new to this I am unsure which one to go for. With all your experience could point me in the right direction?
Cheers
Steph

Budget?

The best is arguably the canon 17-55IS, but the price might make you wince.

What focal lengths do you want? How much do you want to spend?

The 3 most recommended over the kit lens are:

Tamron 17-50 f2.8 non VC
Canon 15-85 f3.5-5.6 IS (that's 15-85 not 17-85)
Canon 17-55 f2.8 IS

Cost £250-£300 up to £700ish...

The great thing about a slr is that you can have a lens which is perfect for a given type of shot. You can get something like a 18-250 but it will always be a compromise.
Decide what you want to shoot and then get a more suitable lens for that. If you like landscapes look for something like a 10-20. If you want a little more zoom then the canon 55-250 is a great lens for the money.

I have decided to stick with the 18-55 for now, but I bought a 50mm f/1.8 for low light and a 55-250mm for telephoto.

Both are relatively cheap and well regarded. My 55-250mm only turned up today, so I have been taking pictures if the woodpigeons wandering around my lawn - Very impressed so far!

I will probably replace the 18-55mm at some point just not for a while...

Good choices, I did exactly the same with my 550d :)

Though I've just got mental and got a Tokina 11-16mm F/2.8 to add to the collection!

Thank you to everyone for your advice:)

I was looking for a lens to do portraits and I didn't really wanna spend more than about £300-£350

Cheers

Exactly the same as me.

I got them from Amazon as they where having a special on Lens, the 55-250 with IS was £130!

I was thinking of replacing the 18-55 with a 17-85, but the reviews aren't to favourable.

It seams to be the favourite route to go for many people buying their first dslr 18-55 55-250 and the fisher prize made 50 1.8. To be fair I headed that way too, well apart from the plastic fantastic. I went 18-55 55-250 and than I eBay-ed both in favour of the 15-85, I was gonna get the 17-85 but I'd read many reviews saying that it wasn't any good so I did consider the 24-105 but went for the 15-85 instead and I will be getting a fast prime like a sigma 50 f/1.4 or a canon 50 f/1.4 and a tamron 70-300 vc USD at some point in the near future, but the 18-135 is a very good lens too and it can be bought from £209 new at flashcamera
