Which lens should i take????

I am off to New York for a few days early next year and am undecided which lens to take. I had considered taking a compact camera, but i think i would feel gutted i hadn't taken the DSLR once i am there. So now the decision is which would be the best lens, i don't want to carry a load around so ideally would prefer something versatile enough to cover most scenarios.

I was thinking along the lines of the Canon 24-105 F4 L, but I'm not sure i would use it enough when i get back to warrant the cost.

Suggestions anyone??
 
I'd take the 10-20, you should have some fun with that in New York.
 
What do you want to photograph? For scenery / buildings, you really need to go ultra-wide, so your Sigma 10-20mm on the 30D would be ideal. It's not very big either so you could take another lens for more general photography too.

If you think buying a 24-105L might be too expensive, there are other options.... ;)

I totally agree!

Just a thought - even though exchange rates are pony now, wouldn't it be an idea to buy a lens when you get there if you need a different one? I know when I was looking (admittedly a while back) a lot of lenses were about the same or slightly less in $ than they were in £ over here! Of course, you should hire one from Stew first to get a feel for it...

I don't think it's quite so attractive these days.

Taking the 24-105L as an example, the best mainstream UK price is £672 at Devon Cameras; £700 is pretty typical. In B&H in New York it's $959 which translates to about £637 - a saving of 5-10%. But if you pay duty and VAT at Heathrow, that £637 quickly becomes about £777 .... not such a bargain.

On the other hand, it would be handy to have an excuse to visit B&H. I've heard it's supposed to be amazing.
 
I had already checked the store prices in NYC online and as Stewart says, not very attractive at all.

I will however be going to B&H, also heard its an amazing store, will probably pick up a few small bits while im there, be rude not to really! ;)

If you buy and uplift from B+H or anyone in the US you must add local sales tax to all advertised prices, 4-8% depending on the State.

James - have you been to New York before? - its absolutely awesome..... I would fully recommend that you take whatever kit you've got that you can lug to the airport with you... you can always selectively choose what kit to take out on a given day... but i'd hate for you to miss any photo opportunities by not taking all your equipment with you.....
