I feel my kit needs a good long lens and I am in the early stages of researching which one would be the best to complete the range. I currently have 17-40, 24-105, 75-300 and the primes - 50 1.4, 85 1.8 & Sigma 105 2.8 macro. I would like to get rid of the 75 - 300 and replace it with better quality glass. Do I go for 70-200, 100-400 or something else? I want to save up and get the right one.

Gilly, I have the Canon 100-400L and have recently purchased the Canon 70-200mm 2.8 which I take it are the two lenses you're considering?

They're both excellent lenses. The 100-400L wont AF with converters on a non 1 Series body, but it has a useful zoom range to begin with - without messing about with converters.

The 70-200 2.8 will AF on a non 1 Series body with either converter ( the 1.4X or the 2X) It's extremely fast at 2.8 without a TC and it's tack sharp.

If I wanted the lens for say wedding work, I'd go with the 70 -200.

If it was more of a wildlife lens then I think it would have to be the 100-400 for me just for it's sheer convenience and flexibility.

Hope that helps? :)

Thanks Cedric - that's the sort of advice I was looking for.

I've recently bought a 70-200L F4 to replace my 75-300 and I haven't missed the extra focal length at all. For the wedding I did a few weeks ago it was great for candids and light enough to carry around for most of the afternoon.
