I do studio portraits, family and children, nothing arty, jut straightforward shots. At the moment I flick between a Sigma 30m 1.4 and Nikon 50mm 1.8. I have just acquired a Nikon 18-135mm.

I always shoot at f/8, so would I be better off just using the new lens for all the shots, or would the prime lenses really show that much difference at that aperture? The 18-135 would obviously save a LOT of hassle in changing lenses as I currently only have one body, but if I'm going to lose noticeable quality I guess I'll stick to what I'm doing.

You could always try it and compare... ;)

My guess is that the zoom would be just as good at f/8. Studio portraits won't usually go near its weak areas, and obviously more convenient.

I use a 24-105L (Canon) which is extremely sharp but as suggested the zoom at f8 should already be pretty decent anyway. As suggested take a few shots to try.

Great help, cheers all. I'll give it a go.
