Which lens hood help required

Still in my relative DSLR infancy but purchased a couple of decent lenses for my Canon 60D recently which are as follows:-

17-55 f2.8 is USM and 10-18 is STM and think I should be adding lens hoods to them.

Any makes recommended or avoided ?

Don't want to spend a fortune but would rather go "decent and good value" than "cheap and cheerful" and end up buying again

Genuine Canon hoods aren't silly money. £29 & £24 but you can get pattern ones for less than £10 each.

If it was me I would put an original on the 2.8 given the cost of the lens and a pattern one on the 10-18.

My 17-55 has a Canon hood, some of my cheaper lenses have cheaply copies.

Be warned though, some of the cheapie hoods are very flimsy and might not offer much front end protection in the event of a drop! Best to read reviews on (for example) Amazon if you're buying third party hoods.
 
I had a cheapy hood for my 15-85mm and the detent nubs became useless after only a few weeks of use. Bloody thing keep falling off or twisting into shots taken at the wide end. Replaced it with a Canon hood two years ago and it's still good.
 
Bitten the bullet and paid the extra and bought both canon items from HDEW for just under £50 including delivery

Bought myself an additional decent size memory card too. Can't believe that I can shoot over 200 raw shots and fill the existing card in a day. How did we ever get by with rolls of 24 film
 
The leness should come already with hoods. Hope you wern't stung for top money without them
 
17-55 was used and purchased for me as a present from my wife

10-18 was new and bought at a competitive price. Fully boxed etc but no hood.

Thought it was just Canon L lenses that come with hoods as standard.

Quite a few Canon lenses don't come with hoods - I know for a fact that the 10-18, 10-22 & 100 f2.8 usm, definitely don't, you have to buy them seperately. There are others too but without looking them all up I'm not sure which.
I would buy the genuine Canon hoods personally as they are far superior in build quality.

Only Canon L lenses come with hoods, their standard lenses don't.

Good reason then to change to Nikon, all their lenses come with hoods :nikon:


If Canon lenses don't come with hoods, it is bit like buying a car without tyres.

I can't see any reason why all Canon lenses don't have hoods with them. Oh yes to sell cheaper then Canon owners to have pay more than the Nikon equivilant. Sorry I am not going to be conned like that.

Not really... Although it's annoying, it's just an accessory, the car analogy isn't a good one.

It would be more like buying a car without floor mats.

I think that there would need to be a bit more justification behind switching to Nikon than just because you don't get a hood with some Canon lenses! It's not a con, just a reality.
Not everyone wants Nikon gear and the OP is just asking which hoods to buy for their lenses, not a debate on which make - they have clearly settled on Canon so not really a valid response imo.
