Going to a good friends Christening this coming Sunday, and thought i'd have a pop at some snaps. I have a 50 1.4 and 24-70 2.8. Bearing in mind i'm only going as a guest, should I take just the 50 or both? The venue is a typical (darkish) country church. I have a flash, but don't want to freak the vicar out, or be too obtrusive either.

With both those lenses you should be able to cover all eventualities, however can I also say check with the vicar about shots during the service because it is an act of worship as well as a family celebration

Thanks Captn' and good point about asking the Vicar

24-70 f2.8 and boost your ISO up to 1600. Better to be out the way then have to move around to make use of the 50mm

Good point

I know, i made it
Nah, its just i shot a wedding on saturday and there are shots i wouldnt have been able to make on a 50mm without being closer and i didnt want to get too much into "the action"

I love my 24-70 f2.8

I took some snaps at my neices christening last year with my 30D / Sigma 24-70. I had the camera set to ISO800 + 1/125.

All I've had to do in PP is correct for the colourcast (didn't set WB)

The posted image is a timely reminder that, in addition to Church lighting and er... seasonal daylight, you've also got to allow for the baby wearing white/pink/pale pastel colours. Proud family members will be wearing any/every colour potentially!

Thanks guys, much appreciated  From the pic and last comment, I can see a fair bit of PP will be ensuing on my part :D

I'd say have the 24-70 on the body, but take the 50 anyway, let's face it, it's not a 70-200 2.8 to lug about ;)

I was thinking along those lines. The 50 is pretty small compared to the other one. So it can't hurt taking it along.
