Hi all just a quick question, I have recently upgraded my camera to a 5d mkii from a 40d, which means I have a 60mm ef-s macro lens which I need to sell, the issue is shall I replace it with a 50mm 2.5 macro or a 50mm 1/4 prime lens. I have a 70-300 which is ok for now but I'm not sure which way to go, any advice will be very welcome, cheers

50mm isn't really long enough to do proper macro on a FF body so I'd get the f/1.4 if you want 50mm.

If what you really want is macro then you'll need at least a 90mm lens to get the focal length equivalent you had with the 60mm on the crop body, the Tamron 90mm would be a good choice.

Cheers nawty totally forgot to mention that I have a 24-70mm also cannot see how i forgot that, cost me enough. Thanks for the advice, not sure if the 24-70 will cover the 50mm range apart from macro, maybe a wide angle lens, open to any options really. Cheers

Well, I still feel that a very fast prime is worth having for dark venues and 50mm isn't a bad general focal length to have on a FF camera so if you are feeling flush I'd probably get one anyway.

However, my personal opinion is that if you don't know what type of lens to buy don't buy one at all as you are probably just trying to burn some cash in your pocket rather than fulfill a specific need.

Think you may of hit the nail On The head there, when I did not have the cash I always wanted a 50mm prime maybe I should just stick to that, cheers for the advice ned, or I could always blow it on a new bag or gadgets lol,

I have had the 50mm 1.4 for a while and would have to say that it is one of my favorite lens. Is sharp, fast and light with nice bokeh. I liked also having to use my feet as the zoom got me thinking a bit more.

I would highly recommend it as a lens, but as mentioned don't buy it just for the sake of spending money.

Hi mark, no I'm not buying it for the sake of it, I have a lens 60 mm macro ef-s to sell which does not fit the 5d and is doing nothing, so I am selling it to fund the purchase, thank you for the advice it seems the 50mm 1/4 is the way forward. Cheers
