Don't forget that using a 500mm lens on a 1.6X crop body, you'll probably fill the frame better than someone using a 600mm lens on a 1.3X crop body, and miles better than on a full frame sensor.
Got the 500 on Sunday, second hand in cracking condition, went out yesterday to Cardiff with it and managed to get a Cormorant taking a perch (fish) will post them later

Many thanks to all for the very valid advice, I decided on the 500mm f4 which I picked up on Sunday had a great day at Cardiff Bay on Monday and was fortunate enough to catch a Cormorant doing some fishing I was well pleased with my captures that day and look forward to many more.
For anyone else in my situation I can thoroughly recommend the 500 f4 also put some serious thought into getting the Manfrotto 393 head, again this is an absolute steal at £100 for a gimbal head  why I don't see more of these about is beyond me ? is it because you all have to much money
I urged you to get the 393 so you know I rate it, but the truth is you get what you pay for- the build quality of the 393 is well down on the likes of the Wimberly and Nill heads and it's twice as big and heavier than my Nill head. I can also mount two camera lens combos on the Nill at the same time
Where I can lock the head up and down movement solid on the Nill so nothing will move it, it doesn't seem possible with the 393 and this might be a long term problem if the torque slackens with use. You might have problems also adapting the 393 to take other lenses as it uses it's own plate type rather than the Arca type.
So it's not about having too much money -not in my case anyway, it's about biting the bullet and spending for the long term.
You certainly haven't done anything wrong with the 393 it's great value for money and you wont shed too many tears at the price if in a year or two you find you need to replace it... if indeed you do.
