Yes
I am about to come into a little bit of money, about £1500, and was thinking of upgrading my 40D.
So here are the choices:

A brand spanking new out of the box 5D with a 24-105L lens or a used but in good condition 1D MKII with a 24-105L lens.

My skills with a camera are getting better but not brilliant so I am thinking that the 1D may be a little too much for me, but then I am thinking there wont be many other chances to get my hand on a bit of kit like this again as I probably wont be able to spend this money again for a while on kit, so do I go for it and grow with the 1D or go for the safer option of the new 5D with warranty etc.

What would you do given the choice?
Cheers

A 5D MKII or similar (3D, 7D or both) are likely to be announced at the end of September so I wouldn't reccommend buying a 5D at the moment. It's likely that the 5D will drop in price after a new model is announced (if Canon do infact announce it, it's of course a rumour but Photokina in September seems the most likely event to launch a new 5D).

If you are intent on upgrading now then i'd say go for a 5D, it's a stunningly good camera.

I had the exact same decision to make and went for more glass, I loved the idea of the 5d but felt that I could spend the money on glass (10-22, 70-200 4 is, 17-55 is) and then upgrade the body as they are changing so much quicker, and all the rumours are around that 5d replacement is on the way, but I am holding out for a efs mount body in between the two (hence the efs lenses).

Thanks guys.
The Mark II has been offered to me for £900 and add a 2-105L lens I am looking at about £1350 quid which at first glance seems good. But I take the point on getting glass.....decision decisions...although quite a nice situation to be in I suppose

I'm sure you'd love the 5D but I hope you won't take offence if I say that it would be totally wasted with your current lenses. Seeing what you have, I think sticking with the 40D and getting some better glass is the only sensible course to take at the moment.

To help you decide I suggest that first you ask yourself what is it about the 40D that you don't like or is limiting your photography and how will either of these cameras change that.

Then ask yourself what the 1DsMkII would give you that you need over the 5D.

Thanks guys.

A 1DsMkII for £900?! That's roughly half the price I've seen them going for and I'd be inclined to ask why it's so cheap.

Having thought a little more I think better lenses will make a much bigger difference to your photography than a 5D or 1DsMkII. eg a 17-55 f/2.8 IS or 24-70 f/2.8L if you don't feel a need for a wider walkaround lens and a 70-200 f/2.8 IS would be a huge leap compared to your 28-135 and 70-300 and if you were to purchase them from Kerso you could easily get either pairing for your budget if you sold the 28-135 and 70-300 leaving you with the 50mm to complete a very flexible set to develop your skills with

I dont think its a 1Ds, its just a 1D Mark II

And its not that I dont like the 40D, far from it..I just thought that seeing as I will have this cash, and probably wont have it again for a long while then spend big on another body for the future whilst I can afford it and get the glass as I go along (probably by hitting the credit cards).

In that case I'd definitely give some thought to Bob's and my own advice on improving the lenses rather than getting a different camera body since your current zoom lenses will limit you far sooner and to a much greater extent than the 40D will :)
