Can we have an option to say they are all a matter of personal choice, so none are really better, just depends on user preference
I use Nikon because it feels right, can't get on with Canon but that doesn't mean there is much difference with the end result

True. Not quite sure how to edit it though. I understand that they are all good though, as I have seen great photo's from lots of them. I use Canon because my Dad introduced it and found it quite useful. I think I mostly agree that it is a matter of opinion, as none are obviously better than another.

I have to agree with Gremlin. For the most part models of a similar level will achieve similar results. This is especially true of Nikon and Canon.

I loved my Canon 5D MKII but in the end the one thing that led me to prefer the D700 was the feel of the camera in my hand and the layout of the dials and buttons.

From an output perspective they were both pretty similar.

Comparing other brands is not so simple. For example a Panasonic m43 camera is wildly different to a Fuji X Series.

You have no idea what you've started here :-) this debate has been running for many years, even before the first digital camera came to market.

I have always used Nikon equipment but have recently moved away from the system in favour of the superb Fuji X series.

The important thing to ask yourself is what do you want to photograph, how deep is your interest likely to develop in the future and how much can you invest in the camera/system?

Ultimately, for me its all about the final image and not just the camera. That said quality, functionality are intrinsically linked.

I suppose its difficult to really compare unless you own more then one system.

Is anyone who has voted on this poll not their respective brand fanboy/girl?
Could anyone view a shot and say, "that's been taken on a ... because the quality is so much better than ..."

Of course not. As has been said above, the best camera is the one which works for you. Note I didn't say "brand", I said "camera". The reason most of us stick with a brand is because of substantial investment in dedicated lenses etc.

Your not wrong there! May as well throw in filters as lens protection to this debate too ;)

On a serious note the camera you are going to actually use and feel comfortable will be the camera you will end up going with. Buying expensive lenses will lock you in unless you what to sell everything, probably lose a bit in doing so and be a right pain too. The brands know this so they always market cameras more than lenses, the cameras are the bait and lenses are the hook.

It doesn't matter which camera/brand it is as long as you get the photos. It always makes me laugh when people are so smug that they have a certain brand and think it's better. The person behind the camera is the most important part.

By the way I wish I never used nikon in my user name. I'm not a fan boy, I never think wow that photo is great because of x brand camera and x lens. I chose nikon as it was just a case of friends already used them so advice/help/testing and possibly borrowing bits from each other is easier than using another brand. To be honest all brands are pretty much the same, just some are better at marketing.

By the way can we have a 'it doesn't matter' or 'the one you will use' category?

You are likely to be restarting WW3 here again :D, we all know Canon is the best :exit:Seriously though, there's little to choose, Canon and Nikon seem to be the market leaders, but its what works for you (as has already been said), and who has the best after market gear that you will need, as in lenses etc., and probably the volume of second hand lenses that you may want to buy. Its best to try each manufacturer if you can manage that, and see which feels right for the type of photography you are going to do.

It's pretty pointless as a question - leaving aside that nearly any major brand will be fine for general use, there is also the question of better for what ? Is a Ferrari better than a Landrover - on a quarter mile straight almost certainly, but try taking a Ferrari off road (plus my chainsaw kit would never fit in a Ferrari and where would I put the dog).

Having used both I would hazard that the Canon Eos film bodies are better than the Pentax MZ series , but without getting down to that sort of level of detail the question is impossible to answer - at the end of the day its just a tool, and a competent craftsman uses whatever tool is best for the job regardless of brand

Bad poll, you need the option "all of the above".

It's possible to get excellent results from any recent camera.

Though, does Kodak still make cameras?

indeed including many that aren't listed

The best camera is the one you're going to feel confident and happy using along with one that you take with you.

There are many reasons people choose a particular brand. For me I chose Canon because of offers at the time and also I liked the menu and button placements, once I'd bought additional lenses etc it became difficult to move away.

Historically it used to mainly be a choice between Canon and Nikon due to the availability of 3rd party and second hand lenses. Now though I don't think it makes much difference. Get yourself to a good camera shop and have a play :)

I think the 1dx is superior to the D4.

It is also my opinion that the 5D3 bests the D800 and D610.

And I also think the 70D has better technology than the D7100.

I shoot nikon.

Why? Because the controls feel nicer and the lenses zoom the correct way

Ultimately, I feel that the ergonomics of the Nikon make me a better photographer in fast paced situations, regardless of the better technology in the Canon equivalents.

Hi, i'm quite new here. I wondered what other people thought about their brands. I always stick to canon but what does everybody else use?
Liam

A camera is a camera. It's not about brands... it's about what camera is best for the job in hand, regardless of who makes it. A good photographer will be able to produce good work with whatever camera you give them anyway.

I'm not voting because there's no option for "it makes absolutely no bloody difference to your photography" :)

As with a few comments here, it's the camera you feel most comfortable using, at the time i purchased by first dslr their was a choice of 3 cameras from 2 manufactures that I could afford, Canons 350D, 20D and Nikons D70s. As for which is best, sometimes it's Nikon, sometimes it's Canon, the other brands only make up a very small (but growing) portion of the market, probably led by Sony.

1. What do you photograph?
2. Best format for that genre? ULF, LF, MF, 35mm
3. Best lens in selected format for which genre?
4. What is best camera to attach to lens?

or maybe the 'Lego' brand - that takes pretty good photos too:

Oh Liam, what have you started son?

If you want the widest range of lenses / accessories available because you intend to grow your equipment stash, then go with Canon or Nikon (or Fuji X if you want something compact). If you are happy with a body and a couple of decent lenses then pretty much any kit will do!

It's all about the picture, which itself is usually all about the light.

Dad.

 Marcel will be sending the boys round to speak you for allowing your son to start such a topic   lets face it as has been said over and over its really not about the make of camera it's how it works for you

As has been said many times, the best is the one you feel most comfortable with, If you spend any amount of time with any brand it is likely that you'll stick with it due to the apparent complexity in re-learning differing menu structures quite apart from any investment in supporting gear, lenses ETC.......... As long as you research well enough before you buy your first then you'll be fine with ANY make of imaging kit!......;)

Andy.....................

I went shopping for my dslr with an open mind, handled a few cameras, the Canon felt nice in my hand, I purchased a Canon. I never understand why some, not all people if they have a Canon state Nikon are rubbish or vice versa, they are both great cameras, it is just personal choice.

These discussions are always interesting and some makes are better in some areas for example Canon make some really good macro lenses
And nikon sensors are superb at the moment
as said though it doesn't really matter in the end what make of camera you use :)
