Which iPod?

Despite my slight disdain for Apple products, I'm sensible enough to realise that they are the market leaders in the MP3 player field. I also find myself with a car that has the required connections and that can control iPods from the steering wheel and the idea of having many albums (which I believe are now referred to as CDs!) available on a package the size of a good weekend's worth of condoms rather appeals.

Not bothered about any video ability (my eyesight's not up to watching on a screen that small) or web accessability (I have an assortment of machines for that), just want to be able to have a large selection of music available without changing disks.

So, what current iPod will store 100 albums at a compression level worth listening to and has good battery life (it'll also get used on 3-4 hour flights, possibly longer as well as on the beach)? Not too bothered about cost although it is obviously a factor!
 
I have the classic
I don't like apple ether but after having a creative Zen it was so much easier
They have great battery life and I've had it over 5 years
And being the classic does not have apps running using up your battery

That's my opinion
 
If you're only interested in music I'd go for the Classic. It's a great bit of kit.
 
Does the car stereo have a usb socket? That's a lot less bother than an ipod. Use one in my car. Nothing expensive to be left in the car then or have issues with battery life or charging or whatever.

You can buy tiny usb sticks so they won't stick out that far from the stereo. I just leave mine plugged in as it is about a cm and is 16GB.
 
Suz, the stereo doesn't but the connection kit does in the glovebox. I'll have to have a proper read of the manual to see what level of control the car has over USB sticks! Of course, the sticks can't be used on flights or beaches though...
 
That'll be why that's the only one I can find!!!

Now, whether to save £20 and get it through Amazon or get it from the Apple shop so I can take it in and throw it at someone if it packs up?!
 
Thanks to all for the advice. Will be looking in again before making any final decision as to which and where - current favourite is probably the Classic 160GB from the Apple store in town, just in case!
 
I had same issue and ended up with a Nano 6th generation. You can get them for less than £100 and they are so small the tuck out of the way in the centre console. The Classic is overkill IMO for what you need.

The Classic 160GB may well be overkill for my needs but far better to be overkill than underkill! Let's face it, the car's overkill in itself and at 440W, so's the installed sound system. I60GB should at least allow a much lower compression rate so a higher sound quality. The centre console has plenty of space, even with 2 pairs aof cased specs, a pot for my teef and some other odds and sods. There are also 2 further storage spaces in the console for shades, change (parking) etc, not to mention the glovebox and door pockets! Space isn't a problem in the XF, although the echoes could be if that space is left empty!

If you want good sound quality, why are you looking to buy an iPod? :thinking: :bonk:

High price doesn't always mean better...

If you have a USB connection, I'd advice you get a USB memory stick for your car, then get something with half decent sound quality for other times.
Sandisk clip+ players get a good audio quality rating (better than any iPod) with a very low price tag. I personally like my Sony one, that's rather old now and still going strong.

I've listened to most of them, and plenty of tests online.

A bit like you saying "How do you know the ATI 6990 graphics card is better than the 6850?!"

They use cheap, rubbish DACs.

I did exactly the same!!!

Ex-wife brought me a 2GB Zen, found the interface to get music on to it crap and it would regularly freeze.

I was completely anti-iPod too until I looked at cost/gb and realised the classic is actually VERY good value for money.

Bought an 80gb classic in 2007, still working fine. I use it for about 40mins 4 times a week in the gym at full volume and it'll easily last me a month between charges.

Agreed there are better sounding mp3 players out there. But if it is only ever going to be used in a car, which has built in direct ipod control and connection in the glovebox so you don't need to worry about leaving anything on show, then an ipod is the obvious choice. And of all their offering, the classic is the one to go for.

Besides, the ipod is actually quite good sound wise, just not the absolute best. For me, the compatibility more than trumps the small quality difference. Especially when your music may not be of the highest quality recording, and you may be using lower quality mp3 instead of a lossles2 format etc.

When I used to run a sub/amp, any MP3 encoded at 192kb/s sounds pants.

Obviously depends on the equipment being used but the more amplification being used, the more it'll show up highly compressed audio files (and if I was clever I could have used audiophiles :lol: )

Well, the car has a specific iPod connection kit and allegedly allows complete control from the wheel. I have a 32GB USB stick which I'll use for specific playlists if necessary. Again allegedly, the car allows some control of USB sticks - yet to play and the iPod has significantly more space thereon!

In most, I'd agree but the system in my car is the best ICE I've ever heard.
