Daryl,
why him/them out of interest? My insurance is due for renewal. i have been with the same insurers for some time, and I am sure I am paying more than I coud get a new account for, but there is a sense of loyalty and graititude that comes into it....but I am not THAT loyal!

I've followed Stve where ever he has worked. He gets stuff done.. you may get cheap else where But i want a claim or change in circumstances sorted quick.

He does what he says on the tin. Straight talking no bull Shizter.
you wont find a more decent chap.. If he can't do it he will say.

That's the people I like to work with. Plus example. My quote from Aaduki was just under a Grand Steve got down by half with extras.

Remember i need more than most in insurance. the norm + 5 freelancers covered. We shoot large groups upto 500 people.

So mine will be more.

I did use E&L Insurance once as they were the first company I found, however when I saw their terms I wasn't too impressed (7% excess would be over £550 for a total loss now). I then bought a couple of new bodies and the value went up by a large amount so I looked around and found Photoguard, which I got £8000+ cover with a £250 total excess for around £230 for the year. Got to be happy with that.

I'm soon to buy a very expensive DSLR. Is insurance worth paying for?

Like every other insurance - it's only "worth paying for" if you need to claim.*

*excluding professional cover required for legalities.

Yes, with the amount of money I plan to spend on the camera I'd definitely like to have the peace of mind that everything's fine should I damage or lose it. However, insurance is based on IF. I'd feel like, if I never had to file a claim, I'd given away a lot of money annually for no reason. May as well put it in the drain. But I guess that's one thing you just have to realise and get over.

you feel far less of a need to mother your gear when it's insured to the hilt ;)

Depending how much gear you have it may be worth talking to your household insurance. I have up to £5000 covered under my standard insurance and that includes away from home. If I used anything for professional purposes I wouldnt be covered but as an amateur it seemed a good way to get some peace of mind without yet another insurance policy.

My home insurance would only cover a max of £2500 outside the home, but for all of it in the home. I decided that should the worst happen I wanted to make sure I'd got enough cover to get the same sort of quality gear back again. I'd advise anyone to check their house insurance first but make sure you're covered. A couple of months ago there was a thread about a guy having £5500 stolen out of his car and he hadn't got insured. He was paying out for the finance on his camera for someone else to use it. Not Good!!!

I checked when I renewed the houehold insurance and got my equipment specifically put on the policy to include the away from home use. As I say, it is only applicable for personal use though and not for business.

Daryl, is that including PI & PL, or kit only?

I've been having a couple of probs with coverage from one particular company and their ideas regarding press work!
