Hi,
Which hood would be best for the canon 50mm 1.8. The options are:
1. Canon es 62
2. copy of es 62 from far east
3. Rubber hood that screw in.

I've heard the es 62 is fiddly and has an adapter that has to be screwed in.

Thanks
Nix

Hi there
Canon Es 62 is the hood for the nifty fifty.....
All you do is press both sides of the hood to fit it to the lens... you don't need any adapter as far as I know.....
hope it helps

The reason I want one is I always seem to suffer from flare (probably a lack of skill), so I though a hood would be a good idea. Is their any disadvantages of the two options?

"Two options"? Maybe I'm seeing double, but afaic there are 4 options mentioned in this thread sofar.

The two hood options are the canon one (or copy) and the rubber hood!

Thanks that was really useful, rubber hood it is then.
Anyone got suggestions for the 18-55mm and 55-250mm hoods, would rubber hoods be best for these two? Or should I stick to looking at the ew 60c and the et 60?

You're better off with a petal hood for any zoom that goes wide.

For the tele zoom, use one of the folding rubber hoods. Forget its wide-angle position and use the middle and long positions, having checked for vignetting (dark corners) first.

You might want to buy it for the largest diameter lens you're likely to own (77 or 82mm) and use with step up rings for several lenses.

If you get a rubber hood – i.o.w. a non-petal hood – you run a considerable risk of vignetting.

Wrong, Fruit: hoods are an integral part of the lens design. They reduce flare, which affects every lens. Never shoot without a hood. It's there to be used. Why else did you pay for it?

I find them pointless on a lens such as the nifty fifty - I often shoot in broad daylight wide open with mine and flare is very rare. On other lenses they're essential, they often save my lenses from bumps and scrapes, but on a small, inconspicuous lens with its front element recessed so deeply I see little point in wasting money on a lens hood.

There's less risk of vignetting for longer focal lengths and wider diameter hoods. The 55mm end of the longer lens should be OK with a plain circular hood about 55mm long (longer if it's bigger in diameter).
