Yes
I'm off on a log haul holiday to the States next year. I don't want to carry the kitchen sink aka my 5D and lenses so I'm after a compact/bridge camera. I'm looking for RAW capability, 14mp+ and a decent zoom range. After a bit of research the only one that seems to fit my criteria is the Canon G10. Any views on this or any other suggestions appreciated :-)

Not sure whereabouts in the States you're going or how often you visit/been there before etc but I'd never go without the DSLR.

Just take the 5D and a couple of lenses with you in hand luggage?

RX100 might be good for you but it's zoom range may be a bit limiting.

I got a Fujifilm X20 to cover the times I don't bring the whole gamut with me.

You might want to consider the Fuji X100s, too. :) Hope this helps.

Well, visited often and lived there for a period of time. My 5D kit is no lightweight and I don't want to be bogged down.
I took my kit with me last time and yes it was great to use but was a pain in the backside carting it around.
Thanks for the couple of ideas, I'll check them out.

Couple of questions:

What is your budget?
Why the G10? This has now been replaced by the G11, G12, G15 and G1X.

For a decent sized sensor, have you thought about micro 4/3rd? You could pick up a very attractively priced Panasonic G3 and a couple of respectable lenses for sub £500 if you look at the used market. The zoom range on most of the higher end compacts like the G15, LX7, RX100 etc is quite limited, albeit they are great cameras for travel.

Cheers, Matt.

I bought an RX100 as a compact travel camera when I was hiking around Indochina. My DSLR hasn't been used since and I am in the process of selling it all.

Ideally under £200! I thought of the G10 for the RAW capability and focal length. All the reviews say it's a cracking camera and better than subsequent models.
If I'm going to go with a camera and detachable lenses I might as well take he 5D.... Which I don't want to take.

Interesting mid-gen I'll take a look, thanks.

Dunno about that. I have a 5D and even with just a 50mm f1.4 fitted it's a lump but a MFT (in my case a G1) + one lens on the camera and another two lenses in pockets seems like a much lighter weight. MFT may not be for you but even with more than one lens it's still worth considering IMVHO.

Geneally I agree that DSLR's can be a bit of a lump on holiday though. Personally I'd take a quality camera with a wide aperture lens and a quality compact with a zoom. The first time I went to Kazakhstan I managed perfectly well without a DSLR as I had a Panasonic GF1+20mm f1.7 for the best quality and low light use and a LX5 for use in good light when I wanted more reach.
