Have just ordered Sky HD installation to be installed over the coming weekend and was wondering which is the best HDMI cable to buy and from where? Any suggestions?

i got 5x 1.8mt cables from Amazon for £1.69 each and theyre brilliant, gold plated as well, drop me a PM with your address and ill pop one in the post to you.

Yer ive got the one that came with my virgin HD box and it seems pretty good

I bought another one for my PS3 (£29.99) and swapped them over and really couldnt see any difference

Just buy a cheap one pointless spending money

+1

I was disguste when i saw the price of the Monster Cables' offerings

eBay will be your friend (Y) lol

I think it depends as well if you are using the HDMI for your sound. I run HDMI cables into an amp for 7.1 surround sound and it's here where I see the difference in the quality. Picture I've not seen a difference but sound quality I have

PM Sent. Many thanks Gary.

Make sure they dont fob you off with an Amstrad box, theyre garbage, you want Pace or Samsung

Can I refuse to go ahead with the installation if the installer is carrying an Amstrad Box with him?

No, but I'd ask him if he's got anything else in the van if he did, just be nicey nicey with him - also, try and make sure it's a brand new box too, as they are allowed to supply you with a recon, it's in the small print. They'll probably try and take your old Sky+ box away too, but I asked to keep mine to sell on (or you could keep it as backup).

I reckon you'll probably get the Samsung one though, that seems to be the weapon of choice at the moment (no problems with my Samsung box so far!! :D)

Many thanks CS with the heads up.

I highly suspect it's psychological.

A HDMI cable is transferring digital data, as has been said. It either carries a 1/0 or it doesn't. You'd need a significant percentage of data drops for the difference to become noticeable.

do they not supply a hdmi cable with the box hd box then
mine is being fitted saturday so will watch for what box gets pulled out of the van

do not let them take your old box, its yours and not theirs and be firm about this.

Sky do supply a cable but its only 1mt and it wouldnt go through my cable management system then up to my Telly, it was about 12 inch too short and was as cheap as crap, not even gold plated ends and was poorly moulded and as thin as a straw.

i had mine fitted 3 weeks ago and was told all new fits are brand new boxes, if its fitted by a sub contracting firm you have a 90 day warranty with them and not Sky, in that time any replacement box must also be brand new, after 90 days its pot luck and can be a refurb.

If your installer is a Sky own fitter you could and in all likelyhood will get a refurb to start with and any future repolacement will also be refurbed

HDMI cable packaged and ready to post

A bit of an update on Sky's Installation fiasco.

I was given a window today between 10-1 pm. The installer calls 10 minutes before 1pm stating that he is gonna be late by 45 minutes. Reasonable I would say. He also asks me whether I have already have a dish attached etc and I tell him upfront that I wish to replace the dish as well as the wiring.

By 2:30 when he does not show up I call him twice where he conveniently disconnects and refuses to answer my calls. Maybe I am thinking he was hanging on to a pole and could not take my calls.

He calls me 20 minutes later telling me that he is stuck in his current task and will be further late. By now I have already spoken with two SKY Customer Services people complaining to them about the poor service standards especially to brand new customers who would or would not promote Sky products to family and friends.

Finally at 3:45 pm the installer turns up and asks me to show the dish and I take him to the back of the house for a viewing. I tell him I wish to replace both the dish and the wiring and he says "Oh! That's another installation team that does that and he will be unable to do it". The guy was behaving as if he was doing me a favour by installing the dish.

What an utter waste of the entire day. :bang: :bang:

If I would have not grabbed this Sky offer for peanuts, I was this close to cancelling my order and asked them to kiss my @$$ good bye.

Now the next installation date is on the 16th of this month with the "heights" installation team. :shake:

unlucky with that installer, the one who came to me was a really helpful bloke, did stuff he wasnt supposed to do (stop laughing, especially you at the back) and was very tidy with his wiring etc.

whats wrong with the amstrad boxes then?

the standard fitters arent allowed above a certain height, or over overhangs on buildings like you say a special team needs to come in for that.

to be honest im surprised he was "off" with you, he'll lose bonuses now..

My only argument is that why not pre-check what kind of team is needed before sending one depending on the property type. It's like asking the interviewer about directions to the place where the interview is being held rather than doing one's homework about the directions etc.

I have taken a day off from work for the same and lost wages beacause of these @$$&%*£ :shake:

they do on the phone when you order it i thought, a couple of guys ordered sky+ the other day at work and one was on the phone ages detailing where it was going and how high etc.

the other guy needed the special heights team too, due to the roof layout and chimenys. the original guy referred it back to sky call center and the guy at work got a call within 30 mins and if i remember rightly the heights team came out 3-4 days later.

I ordered online as I got a cracking deal and the funniest thing is this installer when called me at 1pm asked me about the dish etc and I told him upfront that even though there is a dish and wiring I need to replace them both with new ones. I wonder why he would not explain me then that he will be unable to complete the job today etc. Arrghhhhhhh :bang: :bang: :bang:

its not because you have existing kit, its because he cannot (or isnt allowed) to get to that location because of ladder length and/or H&S. unless you detailed the exact details to him he wouldnt of known, plus theyd probably want to see it first any way.

to be honest ive had sky talk drummed into me over the last few weeks from the 3 guys in the office. the other guy in the office that arranged the 2 guys sky+ installs his cousin is a fitter and from what it sounds like the sky engineers are extremely hard working and will please where they can because they get bonused for it. their basic salary is peanuts so they rely on it. youll probably find that the engineers gives you their mobile number to call if you have any issues with the kit after install, thats because they lose a bonus for callbacks through the sky call center.

not saying youre overreacting or anything but based on what ive been told by the guy at work whos cousin is a fitter im surprised if he wasnt overly helpful..

Just hoping the next guy will not be a jerk hopefully.

I was lucky with HD installation back in March, two installers turned up at the same time and they both got stuck into the job.

Just a quick question for anyone who has got Sky installed recently.
Is there a standard length of wiring provided with new installations between the dish and the Sky box and anything exceeding gets charged?
My dish will be installed at the back of the house and the installer has to run the wires over the roof to come over the front of the house as the next door guys have done. :suspect:

our sky dish install at this house involved a dish being put up and then wires all the way to the rear of the house, the install bloke was really nice.

as for HDMI cables not really much point buying expensive ones, supposedly you might see a difference in handshake times between components but even that im not convinced by, the signal either arrives or it doesnt with digital it doesnt degrade. spend reasonable money on analogue interconnects and speaker cables but dont worry about digital cables as long as they dont drop out alot then cheap cables should be fine

one thing to be wary of is really cheap HDMI cables, many of these cables are not hdmi v1.3 or 1.4 they are earlier standard which does not carry 1080p signal (the cheap tescos cables are v1.0 and 720p is all you get for example).

i bought a 5 metre cable from 7day shop for about a fiver, great for connecting the laptop on the coffee table to the tv for iplayer

any - a HDMI cable is a HDMI cable - no point spending loads of money on one

Thanks to Gary the HDMI cable is sorted :)

My SG$0.02: this HDMI cable scam is quite widespread it appears. Just recently, I bought a Pioneer upscaling DVD player (SG$170) which did not include cables; the salesman was trying to push a 'high end' HDMI cable that cost nearly as much as the player itself (SG$150!)!!! Even after I gave him a piece of my mind, he was not willing to let go, he promised me a 'special price' of SG$120!! :bang:

I ended up buying a SG$10 cable from another store, and it works perfectly fine.:D

Elsewhere, my friend got scammed into buying a SG$80 HDMI cable with his Samsung LCD TV:(
