Which gloves for photography

I go for neoprene gloves, they give a good grip, keep my hands warm and work in the wet, if you get shooters gloves they have the trigger finger tip to either open or missing for better feeling or using touch screens
 
I have real problems with cold hands, and the best combo I have found is, silk liners and then a pair seal skins, can't remember the actual ones..

One thing I've found out about sealskinz is although they are waterproof the outer fabric when soaked sucks up water. Whilst out in the rain for 4-5hrs in the lakes the outer fabric sucked up so much water that I could wring them out like a cloth, water poured out. The good thing was my hands were fairly dry (the slight dampness I put down to sweating). I have the all season gloves. A friend who was with me had the same problem with his sealskins shooting gloves although he said his hands were wet as water came in where the thumb and forefinger opened.

Sealskinz are basically a plastic waterproof membrane sandwiched between outer and inner layers of fabric.

Edit: reading recent reviews on Amazon of the all season gloves it seems I'm not alone in having these problems. It sounds like the quality of product has dropped recently.

I carry 3 pairs of cheap running gloves from sports direct..

In general, your hands will only get cold from wind / rain or your body CORE temp is low. If you keep your body core warm - / toasty you will find you can get away with almost any gloves.

When they get wet, they get changed.

I'm in a similar situation and my research suggests that you can either have warm, which are thick or as dexterity improves warmth decreases. I guess it depends what type of photography you do and what conditions you are likely to encounter.

For those recommending neoprene I have seen some postings which suggest that you need warm hands to start with and that neoprene isn't particularly effective in providing warmth once you get cold. Is this correct ?
 
I have a pair of Lowe Alpine photography mitts bought years ago. The thumb and forefinger flip back and also separately the other 4 fingers.
They are really useful in cold weather.
The only downside is that when flipped back they are held with little circles of velcro which is sometimes difficult to locate, also getting worn.
I am tempted to try a pair of thumb and forefinger flip only with magnets to hold them back.

I was just wondering yesterday if there was something like that. I'm usually content to buy a cheep pair and cut the ends off, although they sometimes unravel

The only negatives I've seen about the magnetic ones come from shooters where the magnets pick up their cartridges - unlikely to be a problem for photographers I would have thought
 
I would think that having magnets in close proximity is not a good idea :(

Doesn't the shutter use magnets to operate? Might they interfere with the camera operating?
 
Silk liners and Endura cycling gloves, if needs be Hot Hands handwarmers to restore circulation to my Raynaud's affected fingers

I would think that it could impact memory cards, at least....

Memory card are not based on magnetic media, so such glove magnets or indeed any magnet should not affect them. If this is incorrect then I would welcome reading about it...........afteral all smartphones have similar based memory in them and the magnetic fields from the transmitter/receiver and indeed the accessory cases with mag closures are unaffected by such fields.

If it's really cold I use full winter gloves on top until I need to use equipment.
I chucked the sealskinz gloves along with the socks as I was as wet due to sweat inside, utterly no use to me who runs hot when on the move.

Never heard of these..............but do note that there is a Lowe Pro version for the same price with some nylon 'reinforement' on the outer layer and based on the pictures perhaps is a tad longer on the hand with more fitted/tailored shaping. If they without outer layer gloves keep hands warm in general usage at this time of year (query how good with windchill?) then might get some soon.

PS Just noted that the Lowe Pro ones are stretch fit compared the Extremities ones being sized......Lowe Pro more snug???

I used to use ex m.o.d woollen ones, then made my own by cutting the fingers off fibre pile type gloves.
I bought a pair of large 'Extremeties' brand in the lake district last year, I find them totally more useful than fingerless gloves and like I say, if it's really cold or windchilly, a proper winter glove/mitt on top is the best.
I do run hot though, so the only time I feel windchill on the digits is if carrying the tripod over the shoulder with one hand on it.
Hope that helps, they are brilliant in my opinion.

Yes that's right. It seems that depending on the time of year, or the weather, I need to get a pair of gloves out of the draw to ride my motorcycle! I must have at least half a dozen pairs :eek:
Compromise is the thing.

I believe lowepro make them, but they're no better than gloves for cyclists, fishermen, shooters etc.

I just use a pair of shooting gloves. All of those things. Lowe Pro made or did make some great photography gloves to
 
I have no single solution, as temperatures and weather varies.
  • +10 deg & dry = no gloves
  • +10 deg & wet = neoprene Fishing gloves
  • + 5 deg & dry = neoprene Fishing gloves
  • - 0 deg & dry = winter or lightweight ski gloves
  • - 5 deg wet/dry = neoprene inside lightweight ski gloves
  • - 10 deg wet/dry = neoprene inside heavy weight ski gloves
In cold conditions, remove the outer gloves briefly if necessary. Keeping the inner ones on.

Unsure if mentioned but Vallerret are supposed to be the nuts. Only issue is that they're made and sent from Norway so you need to get your size right or you'll need to return them and get another pair. I've still to order mine but need to measure me
