Following on from posts in another thread I'm currently posting pics that are straight from the camera as I have no editing software.

With that in mind, what are the recommendations for free software until I can get hold of CS3/4 or something like that?

Thanks in advance

The Gimp. Free. Copes with RAWs of a lot of types and gives you similar options as photoshop.

I personally don't think there is anything wrong with posting pics straight out of the camera. If you can get a really good image without messing around processing it then why not?

I aim to post straight from the camera, with just a little sharpening applied. To that end I use a couple of command line utilitiesExifTool and ImageMagick to i) transfer my images from the cards into my preferred folder/file naming scheme, and ii) to create images that I post here and in my flickr account. Further down the line, I might do some further processing in Lightroom and/or Photoshop.

You can see an example of what can be achieved with a single command line call at this image on my Flickr account

GIMP is "very" hard to learn IMO

tried others too...finally bought Elements 7.....

excellent - 3 levels of editing
Full
Quick Fix..not bad at all
Guided - good to learn with 'walk-through' on steps with links to relevant tools

Well I've downloaded Gimp onto a USB stick to install when I get home and I'll look into the prices of some of the other software mentioned.

@redfan - How long does it take doing it that way compared to one of the standard software options?

Another vote for The Gimp here. It might take some time to learn to get the very best out of it but it's worth the effort and more to the point, it's both excellent and free. :)

Gimp for me too. Lots of tutorials for it on yooootoobe etc. Didn't seem that hard to use compared to PSE 6 .

It's down to what different people are used to. I have PS CS3, but often end up doing stuff in Gimp because I find it quicker.

Although I do also use Picassa, not that powerful but sooooo easy.

Elements is not free . . . However from Amazon Elements.v7 is £28, it get my  compared with hundreds of £'s for CS3 and 4:shrug:

You can have my copy of PSE7 for a £5 note if you want - I got it from a seller on Amazon (Lilys-pad back in July 2010 paid £20.58...)

I cant get my head around it & have resorted back to the full version of Capture NX - only as I found the serial number again after deleting it (Capture NX) from my netbook :bang:

I can't go wrong at that price really can I? PM me and we'll sort it out.
That said, in the meantime I'll be installing gimp and having a go with that.
Many thanks to everyone who posted their thoughts

Well What do you know, I've had E.v7 for all this time and I did not know about the 'F1 help key' . . . :bonk: Unfortunately my dyslexia seems to be getting worse recently so, following written instructions is getting hard . . . however, for those that have Elements, use the F1 key

Don't forget you have free software from Canon (ZoomBrowser and DPP) aswell that should have come with your camera, and they've just released an update aswell.
