Which flash?

All,

I've got about £1k to spend on flash kit and I have none as it stands. I'm mostly into taking macro pictures of animals/bugs etc so not sure what I should go for? Canon ring flash? 580exII? or something else? Should I get a reflector as well? (shooting with a 400D/150mm Sigma F2.8 Macro).

I'm looking at getting a little flash (£100ish) for my introduction to macro photography, but if I was in your position I'd go and splash out on a Canon ring flash. If I didn't want to splash quite as much, then a Sigma ring flash.

I would pick up a Canon Macro Twin Lite MT-24EX and add a reflector to start off.

the one thing I don't get about the ring flash is that it's going to put a lot of hard light on the subject cos you can't easily bounce it off other things.. isn't that the worst type of flash use?
