Which Filter?

Hi all,

This is my first post!! Please can you help

It is time to change the skylight filter I keep on the front of my Nikon 18-200VR. I am thinking a UV is the best option but which manufacturer makes the best ones?
I have looked at Kood and Hoya and prices vary quite a bit, although the price is not a major concern. Can anyone tell me is there really much difference and if so which is the best one to go for?

The best & cheapest option is the lens hood which you probably already have.

I am guessing that you don't think having a UV filter or similar permanently on the lens is a good idea?

I do have the lens hood which is nearly always on.

I do like the protection the filter gives for the front of the lens when I'm out and about.

Thanks very much for the link, very interesting opinions on there!

The"why put a cheap filter on an expensive lens" argument is not one I have ever considered.
Having said that only one of my three lenses has a filter (currently) which I will now leave off unless on a beach.
As someone else mentioned on that other thread "it's all insured"!!

I think I have now been educated. Off into the garden now without the filter to see if I can tell the difference!!!
