I'm looking to get my first filter. Pretty new to photography, so I need some advice. Currently using Canon 450d.

Hi, currently using the kit lens, 18mm, and until I can afford a new lens, I'd like to maximise the quality. Mainly doing landscape, so I was thinking of UV or polarising filter.

get a polarising filter filter, it is far more useful than a uv filter, if you are looking to get different lenses in the future I would also look at maybe getting a larger filter than you need for your kit lens and use step down rings for now, it can save you a fortune in the long run, I have a 105mm cpl as I have a lee filter kit, before that I had a 72mm filter and a couple of stepping rings. hope that helps.

Circular polariser filter most usefull when starting out, Go for a good brand, Hoya,Kenko,B+W or Heliopan. Also this has the best effect when used 90% to the Sun for darkening blue sky's, giving contrast to clouds and for taking glare off the foreground in bright sun, Also for reducing reflections of water and glass but not chrome or mirrors and also for giving saturation to colours like woodland, water and foliage.

UV filters are only realy usefull for digital cameras as protection for the lens.

Definately not a UV then.
UV's reduce quailty not enhance it.

As above, for landscape stuff def go for a polarizing filter. Maybe even a graduated ND filter?

My first filter was a 10-stop ND filter to get some long daylight exposures. They are quite fun :)

Would also recommend B+W for a quality filter
