I need to buy a UV 72mm filter for a new Sigma 17-70 lens. Are there significant quality differences between Hama, Hoya & others? My main purpose is to protect the lens. Hama is somewhat cheaper than Hoya, for example.
I think obviously price is going to reflect quality. To a degree.
The main concensus is, why buy an expensive lens, only to put some cheap plastic infront of it? Go for the best you can realistically afford. IMO I'd go with the Hoya. Common and reputable brand, and cheap enough
Ive gone with B&W F-Pro ones for all mine. You can get them for suprisingly good prices from Hong Kong. I went with B&W ones as they are very good quality, and they make the ring out of brass to help stop it fusing to other filters.
All my lenses have Hoya Pro1 UV filters fitted to them, I have to confess to doing some quite extensive test shots with and without them and to my eyes there was no noticable difference in IQ.
I also tried the Hoya Pro1 digital filter and that did appear to degrade IQ but very slightly.
I have never tried B&W but have heard they are very good filters.
