Yes
Finally done bought a sigma 150-500 for my nikon.

I was asked at the shop if I wanted a filter but cost was £100.00.

Will mainly be shooting birds in the garden or motorsport.

Do I need a filter if so which one?

Regards
Bob

No you don't need a filter, use sensible care and a lens hood to protect your front element from accidental knocks.

I have the same lens and the lens hood is quite deep I would say NO filter is required, the hood gives adequate protection

No filter for birds. For motorsport, if you shoot tin-tops a polariser can cut reflections off the windscreen to show the driver. Suggest Hoya HD particularly for this.

Dirty great lens hood on my 150-500 keeps anything off the front element, I never use a filter unless it's a circ polariser.
