Hi

Just finished the Portra 400 that was in the Hexar RF and now have a choice of two to load up next:

- Ektar 100 - never used Ektar before
- Portra 160 - never used this either

Usage will most likely be general snapshots as opposed to something specific.

Any thoughts?

Cheers

I'm going to try Ektar in my OM10 next. Haven't shot any 35mm negative since returning to film. Been fixated on Velvia.

Have used Ektar 100 in my Yashica-Mat and been very pleased with the results.Have not tried Portra yet either!

Example below of Ektar 100

I have both the Portra and Ektar sitting on the shelf, waiting. For some reason I've got rather a down on Ektar from some of the examples I've seen, but I suspect I'll probably try it first as I can't work out the maths for "Sunny 16" with a 160 ISO film like Portra!

that's a great shot. Lovely detail. Leaning to the Ektar at the moment...

I have been using Ektar and have been reasonably pleased with it....what problems have you seen with it with it Chris..

Just a warning, ektar doesn't have the forgiving latitude that portra has and its colours do go a bit funny when incorrectly exposed. At least they did for me. When it is right though it is lovely, very rich, saturated colours.

I have already uploaded this image into " show me your film shots " but thought I would upload it here as well as it was taken with Ektar.. To me this doesn't look too bad . The colours are not too bad.. exposed using the sunny sixteen rule..

Because you got the exposure right! ;)

Ektar has exposure latitude, its just that the colours start shifting towards blue if you underexpose more than a stop and overexposure causes the colours to become more saturated but unfortunately outside the shadows also start to go blue as the blue from the sky on them starts becoming amplified.

Ekatar will nearly always give you a usable shot, but get it right and it looks amazing.

Steve, I've never used it myself, but a few of the Ektar shots I've seen here have seemed... a little fragile??? Not at all dense??? However, the shot you posted does indeed look great.

If critical exposure is the issue, maybe it's NOT the film to be using as part of my Sunny 16 experiments! Maybe I just have to do the math with Portra 160... :cuckoo:

I think I'm going to give the Ektar a bash - fingers crossed on the exposure!

There's a pic I took with the Portra that I can more or less replicate with the Ektar so will give that a bash as a test. Weather might be different but you can't allow for everything.

Here goes...

No pic?

I don't think there is supposed to be a pic, Chris.

......I took it to mean that bambam had taken a pic with Portra and was going to take a pic of the same thing/place with Ektar when possible.

.....but I might be wrong!

that's how I read it too - so either we're on the right track, or at least there's 2 of us wandering off confuddled :)

Oh dear, you're right. One day I'll learn to read properly! :bang:

Apologies for the confusion - the pic I took using Portra 400 and the Hexar is being developed and scanned at the moment, and I was thinking of taking the same/similar shot using Ektar.

So at the moment no pics to show (yet)

That's a really nice shot Osh.

I love the look of Ektar, been considering buying a few rolls myself next, although lately I seem a little addicted to the B&W of tri-x and delta 400 :D

I've finished my roll of Ektar, and I'm 2/3 of the way through the roll of Portra 160, the latter using my "new" 135mm Pentax-M lens. They'll both go off for processing when this roll finishes... but now it looks like rain for a couple of days.

I'm not sure what I'll get with the Ektar. The film finished when I was half way through a wind-on while sitting on a park bench. The Pentax ME won't let the film advance lever return under those circumstances, so it wouldn't really work to take it home with the lever stuck out. While looking for the film rewind release I noticed the missing cover on the bottom plate that I mentioned yesterday. This got me so flustered that... instead of winding the film back I pulled the crank up and opened the back door!!!:bang: Just for a fraction of a second, so I'm hoping not too much light has got in other than to the last few frames. :bonk:

I dunno, you'd think I was getting senile or something.
