I have a collection of decent old compacts that will be used as table cameras at our wedding next year in place of the usual disposable cameras. I'm struggling with a choice of film though, I want something versatile as the cameras will be around from early afternoon into the evening and also something with a slightly vintage feel, any suggestions?

I'm trying some Kodak Portra at the moment, thinking for your wedding you will be pretty much exclusively doing portrait stuff. The do a 400asa which should give you some flexibility if you want colour, for black and white the Adox stuff has a vintage feel but only goes to 100asa, Fomapan 400 might be a suitable speedier alternative, or one of the rollei retro films.

Not sure about emulsions, but if they are going to be use indoors with slow compact lenses, you might have to get fast film/push lower speed film to compensate, because otherwise it'll just be a bunch of blurry shots.

Cheap, 400iso and lab developed would be my plan. Cheapo colour Superia Xtra 400 or Gold Ultramax 400 or splash out a little and get a C41 B&W. Then all processed at a good value lab.

Fuji 800Z rated at 400 would be my vote

Some excellent options guys, now to buy a few roles and experiment!

I'm just trying portra 160 35mm for the first time, I'm 2/3s through the film and I'll probably post up some results when they're devved, it may help

Load up half with a Generic Fuji/Kodak 400ISO colour (like Fuji Superia) and load half the cameras up with Ilford XP2 (400ISO).

Then get a roll of red or blue insulating tape and a roll of black. Mark the colour cameras with coloured tape and the black and white with black tape.

That way people can choose whether to take colourful modern shots or go for some arty black and white, you get two very different sets of pics, but all can be developed in one go without any extra costs.

I'd say stick to 400 ISO to allow it to work inside and out, with and without flash in most situations.

Portra 400 or Fuji Pro 400H. Neither is cheap though.

Failing that.. Fuji C200, you can pick it up in a 5x 24exp holiday pack from Boots, do they still have the 3 for 2 running on film?

picked up a couple of rolls of Superia Extra - 400 and have loaded up the £5 Pentax Espio 928m which should produce nicer images on full auto than the disposables that would cost the same. Just need to test it under similar lighting conditions to the day and get a few simple minded people to see if they can take a picture without a manual!

Sounds like a sensibly priced option to me!
