As a digital novice (cameras and computers) on a fixed income which software would the panel recommend?

I shall be getting a computer in April (currently relying on the generosity of by son and daughter-in-law, which is limited - not their generosity but availability).

s such I will need my own software, currently using Photoshop for cropping mainly. Is the computer likely to come with anything usable, from Microsoft for instance.

Alternatively, what other editors should I be considering (also considering my limited knowledge at the is early stage)?

There's nothing better than Photoshop; it's used by pro photographers and graphics professionals worldwide. It's the industry standard.

If you're new to computers though, it'll be a steep learning curve! However, if this is a hobby you're going to get stuck into, as you already have Photoshop it might be a good idea to explore it further. There are thousands of free tutorials on the 'net.

Photoshop is great, but it's quite expensive and complicated, my advice would be to go for Photoshop Elements, it's a lot cheaper (around £70 iirc) and has everything you need for all but the most advanced processing/graphic art.

He already has Photoshop!!

THe only two (well 3) for a PC are Lightroom for editing raws and file management and also Photoshop (or elements).

Many thanks for the replies people, very much appreciated.

Yes, while I'm using Photoshop CS at the moment on my sons PC, it's way beyond my pocket (as mentioned, a retiree I'm on a fixed income).

However, Elements has become the hot favourite in the purchasing stakes - should be able to buy my own PC and camera, etc. by May.

As such I've been genning up on it by reading/watching tutorials (much of what they discuss seems to apply to CS as well).

As a result of this new learning I have a couple more questions;

Will the PSD files I've created with CS be opened by Elements?

Also, in a tutorial I watched (Better Digital Photography) RE processing RAW files in Elements, the chap went from RAW to DNG. Is this something you would recommend?

Thanks again.

In answer to your questions, yes, although if you create any 16 bit tiff files PSE won't be able to open them, but PSDs are fine. DNGs are personal preference, there have been a few threads covering the subject, personally I'm a fan, due to the smaller file size whilst retaining the data, but more importantly the metadata is kept within the file.

Some are for DNG others don't see the point. Totally up to you. I will not bin my RAW fles so don't see the point converting to DNG
