Which DSLR for quietest shutter?

My loyal 5Dc is fairly silent... as long as the music is loud enough. :D

The Sony A7R that I have is as noisy as my Canon 1Ds, but if you want max image quality and a totally silent shutter then the sister camera, the Sony A7S is the one for you. Full frame with very big pixels so amazing high ISO sensitivity as well as the quiet shutter.

You mention formal occasions..........
If you do not want to be noticed, It is not only the shutter and mirror that is noisy, but equally annoying in such circumstances, can be the flash and large flashy cameras poked in peoples faces by inconsiderate photographers. For many years Leica rangefinders have been king in such situations, But today CSC cameras like those produced by Fuji and others fill that role equally well. I hate seeing large DSLR cameras on formal occasions, They bring nothing extra to the party except their brashness.

Like children, photographers should be neither seen nor heard.
Using a DSLR at a wedding is brash??

The wedding word was not mentioned.

Even then the Fuji Xt1 is proving appropriate for some professional photographers

It is and I used it at a wedding two weeks ago but I don't think it's particularly quiet - it's attraction is it's IQ and lightness.

But it's a formal occasion?

You can use fuji's, though personally I wouldn't, only for when the lighting is poor.

I once went to a wedding, as a guest and the official photographer was using a fuji x-pro. Nice and near silent shutter action. But the idiot had the fake shutter noise and focus confirm bleep activated, so he was noisy and disruptive as hell (especially as his shooting was utterly incessant!).

Complete tool. His photos were rubbish too (technique, not kit). I asked how many he had taken at the reception dinner, and he smugly replied "about 5000...".

Anyway, I digress...

Sony A7S is not quiet it is completely silent with an electronic shutter front and back curtain.

Not any of the Nikons I've owned anyway :D

Silent church ... *CLATTER* - you get used to everyone staring you down for it :D

Agreed, The D700 is loud as hell, the D3s and D800/e have a silent mode that really aren't massively quiet compared to other wedding photographers I've seen with various Canon bodies (5DIII/6D) that I could hardly tell were shooting.

The D810 is reportedly better, as is the D610 with a quiet continuous mode too - but whether or not they are Canon quiet I couldn't tell you.

My experience tells me that Canon win on the church suitable quiet shutter front.

I still shoot Nikon though :D

Anyone seen these videos on YouTube. Sound of D4s etc etc quiet shutter firing .... pointless because it's so close to the microphone the noise is amplified !

Here's a side by side of the 800 vs 810 (the first 1/2 of it is pointless loud/annoying intro music).
IME the D800 seems about as loud as every other Nikon DSLR I've ever used to give a reference point. The D810 is about 1/2 as loud.

The D810 sounds considerably quieter, however in the comfort of my living room over the speakers they both sound as loud as machines guns, as a reality test it's a fail. There is no substitute for getting hands on and trying one out.

If you've ever used/heard another Nikon (i.e. the D800) then you can make the correlation...

I can, the D810 sounds distinctly quieter. The shutter 'dampened' by comparison. No qualms there and don't disagree. It's the pointless videos that with annoying music that I'm not keen on but thanks for sharing anyway. I just now need to get hands on and fire a few frames for myself.

I am just about to purchase new dslr and sound of the shutter will be a significant point in the decision process.

Spend 2 much money and time on wildlife viewing, find the sound of the camera shutter to be very annoying in an otherwise peaceful world.

Cannot make my mind up between Sony 77 mk2 or 70D.(silent mode)

Seen 6D mentioned has been quiet on a few sites now. Anybody got personal experience.

It's completely subjective. You need to go out and press some shutters to discern this.

Only got the Local Currys around close to where I live, with not many dslrs.. So not much choice to listen too.

Tried a few a Man airport but not ideal environment.

Looked at YT videos,

Am tempted to just buy a 70D and try it on silent mode.

Just looking for advice.

6d is very quiet, as I've said in this thread a couple of times! Even on normal mode it's quiet, certainly the quietest DSLR I've used. Silent mode is very good, and very unobtrusive.
