Which DSLR camera to buy?

I got my first DSLR, a used Canon 30D for £275, and a 18-55 IS for ~£100 at the beginning of the year. No complaints at all, in fact after handling my parent's 350D I'm glad I went for a used 'bigger' 30D than a new 'lesser' XXXD. Personal preference mind, I've got big hands and the 350 felt a bit fiddly. 30D just feels like it'll last for years and years.

Lenses with a wide coverage like that 18-200 tend to give a lesser image quality than ones with a more specific range like the 18-55 and 55-200. Think Jack of all trades, master of none :).

Nice one Dan seems to make sense. Can i ask what you have in your kit.

Between the mrs and myself we have a 40D, 400D, Canon 18-55 f/3.5-5.6 USM, Canon 55-250 f/4-5.6 IS, Sigma 18-50mm f/3.5-5.6, Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 APO, Canon 50mm f/1.8 II, and a Canon 430EX II flash. I'm in the process of buying accessories at the moment because we've got enough glass to cover the focal lengths we need but can't afford to move up in the world yet, so next on my list is a manfrotto 222 or 322 ballhead, 190 legs, and a battery grip for the 40D. My better half prefers the 400D because its smaller :).

Oddly, shooting like for like on manual mode, the Sigma 18-50 lets more light in than the Canon 18-55 USM, and the non-USM version I gave away before we had the USM one.

I will need a bag first i suppose,so many to choose from,i can see me asking some more questions::help:

I bought a Canon 450d with a 18-55 lens a few weeks back for £470 brand new including delivery. So i'm sure if you hunt around you could get a similar if not better deal! And that according to my maths comes into your budget.

Okay fair enough if you splash out on a 55-200 lens for your wildlife photography you might be completely smashing that budget but is it really worth compromising on your camera to splash out on that lens? Other people on this forum would probably be able to tell you more than I can about the real differences between the 400 and 450D.

Personally I love the 450d! Its my first DSLR and its everything i want and need (oops that sounded a bit like a cheesy RnB song).

Try 2nd hand, I only reason I can think to avoid the D60 is the lack of an AF motor in the Body, so you need special lenses for it (and there seem to be a lack of such lenses... i think).

the 400d is a good camera also. However check out 2nd hand, I don't know about Milton Keynes but theres a load of good camera shops in London selling 2nd hand gear. Theres a load of Tottenham Court Rd selling D80's, and 90's, I think the D80 I saw was around £500 with the lens. Not sure about Canon as I dont own one, but I've seen a 400d and a 450d in these shops.

As said, head down to the shops and try out all models you are looking at, try some of the bigger ones as well (40D, D80 etc) if you prefer the likes of the 40D then as stated you can get the 30D (same size and mostly identicle features) for 300-350 leaving 200-150 for a lens or two.

Hi everyone, this is (hopefully) the last update!
Big_bill is selling is 400D and kit lens on here, and i'm on my parents getting it now!

Hopefully all will run smoothly and i'll be able to post some pictures on here soon!
