Which do you use the most...?

Macro or Zoom? :shrug:


I'm currently in a bit of an "I dont know what to do" situation. For christmas I am getting a new lens. Now the question is. Do I get the Nikon 70-300VR or....the Sigma 105mm

I use the Tamron 90mm a lot and I do suppose it belongs to its rightful owner. [I think Diddydave would agree!]
But When I'm at home, with nothing to do I do tend to find something macro-wise that I can photograph.
Plus I also use the 90mm at weddings - for the candids, cos a bit of length suits me Apparently.

But before when I had the pentax, I just had a 70-300 Siggy, and I miss the zoom. I never really used it much other than when I went to watch the Ice hockey, which I never go to watch anymore, because I cant take the camera. So if I got it - I'd go back to shooting hockey - albeit probably not very good.... But I feel Ive learnt Loads about photography since i last went.

The amatuers I was shooting have just set up a team, so there is a possibility of letting them use the images at low res for the website and maybe a couple of print sales - as I did get a couple of print sales out of them before.


Oh what to do what to do....

I could always say sod it - take the £400 Im allowed for the lens sell my D200 and put it together for a D300

Get the 70-300VR, it's an amazing lens. You will love it; and it goes for just about £300 now. Which means, from your budget of £400, you will have £100 left over which would be just about enough to get a set of Kenko tubes

How about throw the boat out and get the 70-300 VR and then offer to put the extra cash towards a second hand 105 Siggy?

I use zoom the most, but that is my shooting style, having said that I've borrowed a macro lens for the week so will see how that goes...

Sounds like there's a chance to earn a few bob with the 70-300, so my advice would be to get that first (maybe 2nd hand?) then use it to earn the cash for the Macro. Of course, you can extend the loan of the 90mm by avoiding DD for a while!!!

I tend to use primes where i can and my siggy 150 comes in handy for short telephoto work. so quick candids can be used. However the reason i used this was that i dodnt like the siggy 70-300 at all, it was soft compared to my primes. I have sold that now and will be purchasing a 70-200 f2.8 IS. so ask me in a couple of months which i am using the most.

I deffo wont get the tubes if I do go for the 70-300VR - After using a true macro lens, I dont feel that I would like using tubes.

I suppose there is a chance to earn a few bob with the 70-300 which also means late nights and loads of processing too.
I feel I've learnt a lot since I last went taking pictures at the hockey. So may make it my new-new years resolution to go back - cos i miss the laugh we had also. May mean more team events, plus its people to network, and give business cards out on what we normally do!

I liked my siggy 70-300 on the Pentax. Not used a zoom on my D200 yet. Although the 70-300VR does seem a nice piece of kit....:shrug:
