Hi all i was going to get my self a cheap canon like a 400d or 40d and spend the real money on glass. What do you think good idea and if so what camera should i get i know there are other models but those 2 came to mind:thinking:

Thanks Dan.

budget?, type of photography?
more info please, there is quite a difference in the two that you mention.

Budget £300-£400 for second hand. As for type of photography i try to put my hand to anything Landscape,Macro, portrait and anything else that i can get enjoyment out of taking pictures of sorry to be vage but ill snap anything i thing will make a good photo:)

I'd say 40d but i'm biased ;)

I have the 400D and although its a great camera to start with i would say the 40D is the better one, depending on what you want to do with it.

For £300 to £400 you will get a 400D with extra's where as the 40D you will be looking at all your budget just for cam and kit lens if your pucky.

The 40d body is more robust than the 400d (we have 400/50/20/10d bodies in our household). The 400d is a quite a lot smaller and dare I say less 'serious' as far as build quality is concerned, they are fine but I dont think it (400) will last as long as the others, could be wrong. The men in our house dont like the 400 as its too small, my wife prefers it, which is why we bought it, plus its light weight. I doubt there is any real difference in image quality between either the 400 or the 40, so I'd try both and see which you prefer.
Your budget will need to be stretched if you want 'good' portrait and macro lenses. My 100 2.8 macro was approx £400 on its own.

Ive just made the switch this weekend from the 400d to 40d and WOW , it absolutly smashes the socks off the 400d by a million miles in my opinion, better build, ergonomics, better fps, metering, af, its just amazing, i now wonder why i didnt do it sooner, oh yeah i forgot (Funds) :bonk:, ive actually got it sitting next to me as im typing this and carnt stop looking at it  , I managed to get a good deal, i got a mint 40d body with 2100 clicks and an mint 17-85mm IS usm all boxed as new for £550 ;), you can pick up a good 40d body for around £400 now. Have a look on here ( www.eos-magazine.com ) there's a few availible, i was going to buy one from here but found one 4 miles down the road....... good luck :thumbs::thumbs:

Another one here who moved from a 400D to a 40D - for all the reasons above!

Saying that, my wife prefers the 400D as it's smaller and lighter so have a play with both if you can.
The sensor/processor on both is pretty much the same so you might not need the extras that the 40D brings, depends on what you're looking for.

Thanks for all that real help well at the mo i have the pentax k10d which is a great camera but carp for equipment i plan on keeping the pentax as well but i just find that there are so many more bits and pices avalibe for canon and canon is in the family as my dad has a canon and my previouse camera was a canon dont know now why i didant stick to canon but the pentax has done me great but feel that i should regain my routes in canon. As for cost of lenses thats no worrie thats why my budget is less for the camera and if i find that my goal is canon ill sell the pentax unless the wife wants it (fingers crossed trying to get her in to photography):)

My wife's first 'proper' camera is/was the 400d she loves it.

If you've been using a K10D I'd have thought that the 40D would suit you better. It's just my VHO but I think that the build quality and ergonomics of the Pentax are way way better than the 400D, and much better than the 40D too, again in MVHO.

I suppose you know what you're doing but I'm a little surprised that you think that the Pentax system is limited. If I had a K10D I don't think I'd be looking to switch to an APS-C Canon.

I've got a 40D and am delighted with it, have had a play with a friends 400D, and while a nice camera, the build and handling is no comparison. IQ probably very similar, and think you get few extra pixels with the 400D (think the sensor in the 40D is the same as the 350D) but the functionality and fps on the 40D blows it's little brother away. I'm byassed as I've got one, but choosing between those two I'd pick the 40D every time

Having recently change from a 400d to a 30d I can recommend you spend abit extra and go for a **d body over a ***d.

I moved from a 300 to a 20 a number of years ago and it was a huge leap.
However I think working with the 300 and getting used to its issues and working around them taught me a lot about photography.
If you can afford the xxd then its a much better piece of kit for very little extra money.

I would choose the 40D build quality and ergonomics over that of the XXXD series.
I upgraded from a 350D to a 50D a few months ago and the differences are day and night with regards to handling.

The XXD feels right in my hand and the buttons/wheels are postioned in a far more natural place for operation. I used to have to drop the 350 from my eye to change for example aperture as it required a press of a button and turning the wheel where as the XXD series you have different wheels to turn for shutter speeds and aperture.

The 40D sensor is 10mp, the same as the 400D and not the 350D.

This might help as well:

Then lets add in the Pentax K10D and K20D just for interest LINK.
The K20D can be bought used for around the price of a second hand 40D now. With the K20D you gain lens micro adjustment, 50% more megapixels, fully weather sealing.

As others have said, they may be biased .. then I suppose I probably am as well

have you already got lenses - if not don't rule nikon out of the equation
I'm canon - but the nikon cameras seem to be better vfm at the moment
once you start spending on glass it's difficult to change direction
