Hi Folks,

I am looking for any recommendations for a flash unit to act as the master for my canon 400d. I already have the speedlite 430 exII, but happily Canon in their quest for more of my money have made it so that this particular model- even at over £200- cannot be used as the master for a two or more flash unit set up.

I am loath to spend another £300 odd on the 580ex if i can avoid it. I have seen Nissin models that work well with Canon's, but I don't know if they can be used as the master flash with my speedlite as a slave to them.....?

Any ideas or suggestions (Apart from switch to Nikon) greatfully received.

I suppose there's a few options :

1. get A N Other Flash and purchase a set of wireless triggers (such as the RF602's from our very own FITP in the FS area)
2. get a Canonn ST-E2 and another Flash (maybe another 430 or a 550 or a 580 - or older guns if they work ?)
3. get a 580/550 to use as the on camera flash and as a master to controll the off camera flash

I've seen the 550EX's coming in at a reasonable price.... I've got 2 myself and they are still GOOD guns ...

(i'm sure there'll be more options suggested by others)

You could use the ST-E2 to control the guns, and buy another another 430, but when you look at the price it's probably cheaper to opt for the 580.

There are 3rd party flashes out there that claim to work with the Canon system, but I've not used them so can't comment.

If you want to use the ETTL options with the flash then I think you are stuck with a 580/550 option or 430/ST-E2

The best option maybe to look for a good secondhand 550

The top Nissin gun works as a master unit. I think it's about the best value alternative to Canon. Also check Sigma and Metz.

Kerso will do you a Canon 580EXII for less than £300. He is a well respected independent importer on here. Check him out in the For Sale section, or PM him as kerso for a price.
