1.Canon EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM

2.Canon EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM

one or maybe none will replace my EF-S 18-55mm kit lens

:) :) :) :) :) :) :)

Well if you dont have one I would start with the 50mm f1.8 cheap as chips but a cracking lens.

What do you shoot?

Hi,

What exactly is it you are looking for?
More length or just better quality glass?

Looking at what you currently have an 18-55 and 55-250 I am guessing just a nice lens for the low end?

If so i would personally consider either the Sigma 17-70 or the Tamron 17-50

I have used both extensively and they are both fantastic in their own way

Sigma:
For: 20mm more length, HSM, cheaper, OS version is more expensive but better than the Tamron VC option
Against: variable aperture (2.8-4.5 or 2.8-4 on the OS) (but so are your other considerations), you need to make sure you get a sharp one but in my experience a sharp one matches the tamron

Tamron:
For: fixed f2.8, normally ultra sharp
Against: Pricier, noisier, the zoom ring goes the wrong way :-D

+1 for the nifty fifty, I was suprised just how much I could do with it, landscape, portrait, low light, it stayed on my camera for a while now

50mm f1.8 ...have one. it is good

just as Adam said i just need a nice lens for the low end and so i can work in confined spaces for group shots etc
i will have a look at the Sigma 17-70 or the Tamron 17-50 too

cheers ken

Is the f/1.4 USM much better in terms of clarity?

I have the 17 - 85 which I really like as a kit lens but I bought a Sigma 18 - 250 so it doesn't really go on the camera now...

Save a little longer and go for a EFS 10-22, then you really will be able to work in tighter spaces and the image quality will be drastically improved. I use mine more frequently than all my L glass

thanks for all the feedback... just didnt get the answers i was looking for ...

The 17-85 f4-f5.6 is the one you want. I have this lens and it is a good lens and will do what you want. It is quite a versatile lens and good one to be starting with.

The 50mm f1.8 is a fab lens (I also have one of these) and also cheap, every portrait photographer should have one in their kit and it won't break the bank but I'm not convinced it is right for group shots in a confined space, however that depends on how confined the space is!!!!!

Hope this helps.

The only one of those that will sensibly replace your 18-55 is the 17-85.

Forget the 28-135 on your body, that lens is designed for a full-frame body so will be too long at it's wide end.
28mm on a crop body is the equivalent to around 45mm on a full-frame body whereas 17mm is around 27mm equivalent.
Do the maths and they're basically the same focal lengths for the two different bodies, 17-85 x 1.6 crop factor = 27-136.

I have a 17-85 and it's a great lens but you could also consider the 18-135 if you can stretch your budget a little more.

Just in case you haven't bought a lens yet, I have just replaced my 17-85 with a 24-70 so my 17-85 is now for sale if you're interested - it is in excellent condition and has always had a filter on it! Let me know if you're interested.

Eh? You got some good suggestions IMO? Add to those the Canon 18-135 IS. All good walkabouts. My money is currently on the Tamron 17-50 f/2.8. About as good as it gets for the money and you can buy one for about the same price as the two you mentioned, which are nowhere near as good.

What sort of answer(s) were you expecting??

If your budget will stretch to it, the 15-85 is a much better lens than the 17-85.

The 28-135 is in my opinion not really wide enough on a crop camera....

Hi Ken

I have the 17-85IS lens and am happy with it on my crop body and would certainly look at it as a possibility - what problems are you finding with your 18-55 lens ?

Is the 18-55 the IS lens or non IS ?

I've had the 28-135IS lens previously on a crop body and for me, it was a great focal length, certainly at times it was not quite wide enough (but you still will have the 18-55 lens to swap to if needed) but for the majority of times, I found it a great focal length for what I was shooting.

Sigma 10-20mm and the 50mm would both be good choices depending on what you like to shoot and your budget.
Also how about a nice macro/portrait lens like the 50mm 2.8 sigma or the 50mm 2.5 ( or 60mm 2.8 ) Canon?
