Which Canon lens to hire for wedding?

Yes
Going to a wedding as a "spectator" only, but would still like to try and get some nice pics.

I don't want to carry much equipment. One lens on my 50D and one spare MAX.

I will be using my 85mm 1.8 for longer shots, but for the evening / dark indoor shots I'd like to hire something a bit faster.

The options I'm thinking of hiring are the 24mm 1.4 or the 50mm 1.2

The 24mm and my 85mm will give me wider range of focal lengths obviously. The 50mm maybe isn't different enough - but then at ISO 3200 and f/1.2 I could shoot in the dark

Which one am I likely to get more use out of, alongside my 85mm 1.8?

I would go for the wider angle for the dancefloor action shots late on plus it will come in handy for any group shots throughout the day.

I'd suggest a wide prime too.

I've seen shot taken with the Canon 35L f1.4 by Raymond and they are really fantastic.

I would also go for the wider prime but as a spectator is it not best going for a fast zoom like a 24-70? Or are you hoping to gain portfolio shots so therefore need the low light? Your 85mm 1.8 will be great too.

I think the 24 and 85 would complement each other better than the 50 and 85. If it was me though I'd probably just take a 24-70 but that depends on how much you want to get the low light shots

What camera?

FF - 35L
Crop - 24L

In the evening my 24-70 stays in the bag, its prime time (lol terrible pun), so 35/50/85 gets to play.

Wide prime, 50 is too close to the 85, and the 1.2 won't help you in group shots anyway, where the narrow dof will cause havoc.

Thanks for the suggestions. Sounds like 24mm would be more useful for me.

Camera is 50D.

The photographer is doing up to the cake cutting, so I wanted to get some nice pics for them of the evening.
If I decide on zoom lenses, I can probably make do with what I already have. But I'd rather stick with one or two fast primes to save space/weight and so I can avoid using any flash guns.

Basically I'm hoping to use high ISO, wide ap and possibly B&W conversion to get some low light pics of the evening that nobody else is likely to capture.

Another thumbs up for the 24L on a crop body.

I use a 35L on FF in this situation so you will get more-or-less the same FOV with all the other advantages.

I'm moving over to using crop more and more and the 24L will be my next lens purchase for exactly this reason.

Happy shooting

Sounds like the 24L is the perfect choice then.

Raymond: out of interest do you just solely us primes as the evening reception to avoid flash being used?

No, I use flash too, I use it in conjunction of having a prime and shooting pretty much wide open. F/1.4 + iso 1600 gives you pretty good atmosphere, where the flash is just to lit the subjects.
