Hi All

Which Canon Camera would you choose for fast sports, dogs doing Agility etc.

5D mkiii
1D Mkiv
1DX

Or another

Personally I like 1D bodies so from that selection I'd go with 1DX

That said I'd be more than happy with any of them.

1D4 is what I'm about to upgrade to from a 1D3

The 1Dx just does it, the 5DMkIII sometimes does it and the 1DMkIV used to do it.

They should all do a job.. But the best is easy the 1dx and thats what I would go for :)

I own the mkIV and a 1dx BTW

That's good, you can give your iii to me. I'm not that far away;)

My 5D3 has coped easily with everything I've done so far and just after I bought it a friend with a 1D4 asked if I wanted to do a straight swap after he'd used mine for an hour or so. At the time the 1D4 was more expensive than the 5D3 and I was tempted, I could of swapped and sold the 1D4 and bought another 5d3, but I loved the 5D3 so much I decided against the swap. Eventually he did as I would of and sold his 1D4 and got a 5D3 and both he and I still have the 5D3 and both are more than happy with it.

The only camera I would rather have than my 5D3 is the 1Dx though. The AF system is about the same but for 'fast sports' the faster fps would be better suited IMO. As said above, you could do it with the 5D3, you could do it easier with the 1Dx or you could try with the 1D4.

Either of the 1d bodies. Which one - depends on what glass you have to put on them?

Nothing sinister

It's just if the OP doesn't have suitable glass to cover the subject well enough for the Full Frame 1Dx, then the 1dmk4 can offer a little more with the 1.3 APS-H sensor. It's exactly the reason why I haven't made the jump to the 1Dx.

Well ..I ahve the mkIV and the 1dx... the full frame 1dx with more pixels and better quality FF means you can crop in more...this offsets the loss of crop and in some cases is better... I use all manner of lens.. the 1dx wins every time... crop in beats the crop out if you follow :)

I'm with Tony on this point. I kept a 1D4 for 12 months after getting the 1Dx's because I was concerned about losing the crop advantage. The 1Dx crops down to 1D4 FOV without any noticeable problems.

Thanks.

Yes I follow and find that interesting, as I wasn't so convinced? Perhaps I was letting the upgrade cost influence me more than I thought.

Personally.. the only real advantage of the 1dx over the mkIV is the higher ISO .. theres lots of upgrades but in reality thats the biggest main one... so would depend what you normally shoot... I would compare iso 6400 on a 1DX to iso 1600-2000 on the mkIV .. thats not a mathamatical factual comparison.. just me :)

I can only comment on the 5D and the MkIV. I feel that the MkIV locks on quicker than the 5D but doesn't hang onto the focus as well. ISO performance the 5D is a clear winner but a little short on the FPS. But if you can afford it then the 1DX has got to be the way to go? If you want best value for money then the 5D3 would get my vote.

I've been holding off selling my MkIV for this very reason. I bought a 5D3 and with the extra MP it crops down to the MkIV crop really well but I wondered if the 1DX would be the same with its lower pixel count.

Reading this maybe its time to let the MkIV go now.

Made the leap to 5D3! Had. A 1D3 and1Ds3 . I love the 1D3, it has never let me down and focusing, image is great.
5D came along and wiped the floor. I mainly take aircraft piccies.
Most people ive spoken too would prefer the 5 to a 1D4, which put the spanner in the works, as i was going to get that as a replacement to the 1d3.
Only the frames per sec are a minus i would say. Obviously build quality is superior in the 1D series.

I say again 5D for me.

Regards Steve

Thanks All

Buying a MKiv for now and see how I get on, it will compliment my 5D3
