I recently bought a Canon EOS 450D with the standard lens kit and am looking at buying a reasonable zoom lens. So far I have come up with the Canon 70-300 IS USM as looking like the best quality lens I can afford. Has anyone got comments regarding the optically quality of this lens or any recommendations for a different lens?
 
I've heard good things about it. I very nearly bought one before I made a big of cash and got a Sigma 120-400mm lens instead. There's a review up at
in English if you want to read it. They describe it as a "hidden L series lens".
 
Canon 70-300 IS USM is the very lens i am in the process of ordering right now for my 350d, so i hope its all its cracked up to be

Marky I've looked at the 70-200 F4 and am just not sure if i'd miss the extra 100mm, is the optical quality that much better?

RichardC whats the optical quality like on the sigma lens? do you find the extra 100mm comes in useful?
 
its meant to be a cracking lens and i was gonig to get it but had to settle on the sigma 70-300 APO as was cheaper and needed it quikly for a holiday.

oh well cest la vie!
 
Yeah I'm seriously thinking about just going out this weekend and buying one...
 
I totally rate the 55-250 IS. You can pick these up for about £175 and in my experience a cracking and versatile lens. I can't rate it highly enough TBH.
 
Guess I'll just go down to the camera shop this weekend and try both the lenses out, the 55-250 IS will save me loads of money too
 
what lens are using to cover up to 300mm? you say your not sure you will miss the 200 to 300 range, but you wont miss what you have never had:shrug:. out of all the lenses suggested, i would go for the 70-200 f4l, it is a true L lens and are meant to be sharper than a really sharp thing.
 
I guess I just worded it wrong, if I get the 70-200L will I find the lens doesn't give me enough range, when compare to the 70-300. How much does effect on the optical quality would using a 1.4x tc on the 70-200L, would it still be better than the 70-300 then?
 
Thanks for that Walls, looks like the 70-200L is still the sharper lens with a 1.4 tc, but I think from their comments they recommend going for the IS version, which is just way over my budget right now...... so should I wait and save up for the expensive one?

but then you'd have to factor in the cost of the 1.4tc - another £100 ish if you go for kenko or similar
 
The Sigma 70-300 APO is also a good budget zoom which can be had for around £150ish.

Bear in mind that with the 70-200F4L there is no IS. This means not great low light performance. If you add a TC you will loose even more light. The 70-300 with IS I think will give better results if you spend a lot of time in low light over 200mm.

If you are going to spend all your time in good light and mainly below 200mm, then the 70-200 F4L is a great lens if you can stretch to it.
 
Hello Richard. I have a Canon EF 70-300mm f/4.0-5.6 IS USM I want to sell. It is about 9 months old, Mint and boxed. £310 incl RMSD. If you are interested let me know. It really is a cracking lens. Now I have the 100-400 i can't justify keeping it.

I won`t be getting my grubby mitts on it till 10th january cos its officially a birthday pressie, so you will probably have got yourself sorted by then.

I've only done a couple of shoots with it so far, but it seems pretty good. If you go on my Flickr, the moon shot, all the birds and the Oulton Park trackday were done with it. This IS is amazing, it lets you get away with some stupidly slow shutter speeds and still get a decent keeper rate.
 
Only managed to look at the 70-300 is usm at the weekend, none of the camera shops I went to had the 70-200 in stock, think I might just wait a round until after christmas before getting the zoom lens.
