swapping from film to digital and know absolutely nothing about them. Last year was going to buy the Nikon D80, but life got in the way, now am still thinking can afford this camera. I sold everything I used to have for pennies, (used old Minolta and sigma lenses) so have to start from scratch.

I dont particularly like computers so dont want to spend a lot of time playing around with photos, this is why havent changed to digital before, but I really want to get back into photography, as a basic amateur but really enjoy it.

would anyone put me back on the right track. would rather buy the body only and one really good lens and build back up again. Have around £500 but can push it if need be.

Any help appreciated. thanks.

I would go for the best you can aford but you have to like the feel of it as well I would however go for a camera that can take SD memoy cards as that is the way things seam to be going so have a look at the canon 450D.

but at the end of the day you ar going to be using it so go to some shops and see friends and have a play with what is avaliable and us e that as you ulimate guid but yse news here to fine tune what to look at.

personaly I have the 400D got just over a year ago and I like it. but this has CF cards so not a good choies going on the SD card rule but I did not realy have a choice.

thanks, did a lot of looking last year when I first was going to swap. the Nikon D80 came out on top of the Canon 400D in reviews, so this is why I thought of this one, did go shopping and picked it up, felt ok, Nikon D200 was soo heavy! I think I am going to go with this camera, and cross fingers.

thanks.

Most newer consumer cameras take SD cards, including the Canon 450D and the all Nikons below the D200 (D40/x,D60,D80).

The D80 is an old model now and due to be replaced, but it's still a cracking camera and still worth considering, but only at the right price. Best Idea is to go and try a few different bodies and see which feels best in your hands. It's a shame you sold all your old Minolta glass as it would probably have worked fine on one of the Sony dslrs.....

yes thanks, someone told me after the event.. I honestly didnt realise some film lens were compatible with digital. amazing..

may look at a mint second hand instead, to sart me off. if anyone has any??!!

How about taking a look at the new Sony dslrs, the start prices are very enticing, especially if you have been a Minolta user in the past.....I won't mention your lenses again, honest :D

am thinking about that one. The magazine I looked at reviewed the Sony quite well. I used to get a little disapointed at the pics I took with my old lenses, our teacher used to use canon prime lenses and they were so sharp, which is why I looked at the Canon/Nikon range. I am a little out of my depth asking any questions in the shop and so far have been very frustrated with trying to be sold whatever they are getting rid of.

I am going to have to go out and try handling some before buying I think.

If you are planning to buy lenses then you need to have a look at each system and see which fits your needs/budget. While the Sony bodies are quite cheap, the lenses struck me as quite pricey compared to Nikon/Canon (I stand to be corrected though) ones.

You're doing the right thing by asking questions, read some online reviews and then ask some more questions - never take the advice from a salesman, especially in the likes of Jessops :nono:

as you may know, minolta lens are compatible with the sony range of DSLR's,which are available quite cheap on e-bay etc...and we're not to far away if you wanted to look before you commit....

You wont go wrong with a d80 i have one and find it exellent it has a better feel to it rather than the 400d/450d which do feel small in the hand go for the d80

I'd choose a second hand camera body according to the advice given in the posts above then consider hiring from Lenses For Hire to help you decide what lens(es) you'd like for the sort of thing you want to photograph.

As a complete newcomer to photography, I bought a second hand bundle of stuff from a friend (Canon 350D, a couple of lenses, some filters etc.) a couple of months ago and am just finding my way around everything. When I feel ready for new glass I'm going to hire then look in the For Sale section here to see if there's one available at the right price.

Good luck and enjoy, whatever you decide :)

I recently sold my D80. It was the right time to sell considering all the new models Nikon have/will release this year (OK, D300 was end of 07, but hey... :).

I watched several other D80s on eBay and they all went for ~£350, body only. Mine went for £355 + postage.

It's a very good second hand buy, and mine served me extremely well. It may be an "old" model but it's certainly a great step up from any pre-D80 models. There is no current or even a rumoured D80 replacement but if you want to spend a bit more on better lenses then I'd stick to a D80. :)

Good luck! :)

YUP, decided on the D80 and am picking it up saturday, thanks everyone. got it secondhand from a local camera club member, known by a friend of mine for £340.00
