Hey all, I'm looking at buying a new DSLR as my Nikon D80 had sadly given up the ghost. I was therefore wondering if I could ask you all for your opinion please as I'm struggling to decide between the Nikon D3500 and the Canon 200D/2000D. I mainly use my camera to take action shots at country shows/equine competitions and also holiday snaps but do like to take it to places like RSPB Rainham Marshes. I'm guessing both cameras will be lighter than the D80 and both seem to take good photos on the reviews that I've read/watched.
Does anyone have either camera? What are your thoughts on them?

Don't forget you are not just buying a camera, unless you buy one with a kit lens and don't buy any other lenses , flashes etc you are buying into a system and changing can become expensive.
What lenses do you have at the moment if you have more than one that will influence your decision.
Read the reviews , do your homework ,try them out ,ergonomics can play a major part in what you buy.
 
As trout suggests, if you already have some Nikon lenses then that would be the better route. The Canon 200D does have some nice touches over it like the flip out LCD that is also a fully functional touch screen. It would be better for video but the Nikon will have the edge for photo image quality. Nikon APSC cameras in general have better dynamic range and high ISO performance than Canons.
 
you might find it harder trying to adapt to a different menu system with different names used if you go to canon
plus everyone knows canon are sh*** lol lol
 
I think Canon has one of the easiest menu systems to be fair, though Nikon's are also very straight forward and barely change model to model
 
Ignoring the canon option as I know b****r all about them... with the d3500, I think it’s the switch to one command dial a dark VF and losing all those external controls that I’d struggle with. Personally I’d look at d7200 or higher even if it means buying used.

Nothing at all wrong with the d3500 but if you’re used to a big body and all that brings it might be a culture shock.

While it is true that the D3*** series are smaller than the D80 OP has, the D3500 would annihilate it in every other way - I'd agree though, if ergonomics and on body controls are important, a D7200 would be a better option. But I feel that budget is a big factor here, and the D3500 can be had atm used/like new for less than £300
 
Thank you for all your comments. I only have 2 lenses for the Nikon, a 18-55mm and a 70-300mm, I'm hoping I can use the 70-300mm on a new Nikon if I bought one. I also have the chance to inherit a Canon lens from my dad, not too sure which one, as he doesn't use it. As I like to take the camera on holiday with me I think maybe a smaller/lighter one would be better, I did find the D80 felt quite heavy to hold after a while.
Unfortunately I do shake a little when I'm taking photos so though maybe the VR kit in the Nikon would be good, not sure if anyone has that on their camera, if so have you found it's made much of a difference?
I know that the D3500 doesn't allow you to use a remote anymore, I don't have one but was something I was looking at investing in at some point, but know that you can use the app? Is that any good?
Has anyone found the missing function key on the side something that they can't get used to?
 
Well after a bit more research have decided to buy the Nikon D3500. Hopefully my old SD card and lens will still work on the new Nikon and I can upload some photos from it soon [emoji16] thanks again everyone
 
Consider a D3400 if you are looking at the 3500. Slightly different body but you get a function button and can use a 3 pound IR remote.
