I have £1000 to spend on a DSLR Camera and Lens Kit and as I am new to photography I would like to know what forum users would buy if they had £1000 , The lens needs to be an all rounder more than job specific.

A Nikon lover eh? Too dear I'm afraid and I am not into pinhole pics, I did that at school.
£1000 is the absolute limit
 
The usual advice - never mind the brand, pick out the relevant cameras in your price range, and then go and handle them in a shop, play with them, work out which feels the best to you. The brand name doesn't matter over much - how "right" it feels in your hand matters a heck of a lot. If it's not comfortable to use you won't use it.
 
Go to the Focus on Imaging Show at the NEC Birminham next Sunday, & you'll be able to hold the cameras that fall into your price range & also ask questions.

Then its make your mind up time...:shrug:
 
All the advice is good - Witch sums it up nicely even though I would add that you should consider this as buying in to a system of lenses and accessories rather than a simple camera purchase. £1000 is a good amount to spend so spend wisely.

Personally, using hindsight to help me ;) I would split this £600 for the lens and £400 for the body on the basis that good glass (pro quality f2.8 and lower) is an investment. The Digital SLR body will always be a disposable item and I would reccomend buying S/H from a reputable dealer (e.g. mifsuds or MBD).

Infact S/H 6MP D100's are currently selling very cheap; £199 in mifsuds as they have an overstock - a bargain if you ask me - £800 will get you a very nice lens e.g. the 17-55mm f2.8 (or £649 S/H from mifsuds). Alternativly mifsuds again have a D80 mint- and boxed for £399.

Ultimately you have to choose for yourself and you have to feel comfortable with that choice.
 
For just under £1K, you can get the 40D + the 17-85mm IS - a great selection and choose over price.
 
thanks for the valuable info all. I really fancy the EOS40 and 17-85 lens. I am going to the far east in April for a month and it will be hot and dusty so the 40d appeals to me as it has a tougher body and its doors/hatches are sealed (according to reviews). How do you guys know about cash back? Do you find retailers up the prices if a cashback promotion starts???
I see on Dixons online the EOS40D is £945 plus a 20 quid discount with voucher code (free delivery) and if I use my nationwide credit card I get a free years extended warranty and 100 days insurance accident and theft ect worldwide...sounds good to me. Plus my old point and shoot (canon 1s is uses CF cards so i already have that).

D200 with 18-70mm DX lens. Weather sealed, same resolutio as 40D and better built. Screen is smaller but who cares.
You'll get £60 change from a grand, enough for a battery and some CF cards, or a good bag.

If you're dead set on the 40D and you're buying abroad, you'll defnitley have enough change to ditch that crappy 17-85mm and buy a 'proper' lens like a 17-40mm 'L'. Amazaing quality. Have had mine out in torrential rain and it's still going strong after 4 years. A wetaher-seald camera is only as good as its weak link and the weak link will deffo be that IS lens in the wet.
 
thanks marky , special man has confused me a bit, I will have to read up on the d200 now!!! I am buying in the uk special man , I am touring the far east, i amy go for a lens there but not the body.
EOS40d or D200 mmmm help??
 
Yep was gonna suggest the 40D with kit lens too, got one myself (with a better lens, didn't bother about the kit lens as had one already). Love it.

The 40D is also user-friendly enough to be a starting camera. Has those pre-set modes like the 400D.
 
Thank you for all the very valuable tips, I have had a look at the Nikon D200 and I am still edging towards the EOS40D although the Nikon does look very capable.
Assuming I go for the EOS40D with the lens (17-85 ) , What would I be looking for to complement that set up lens wise? Its General everyday things I will be photographing like beaches, sunsets, jeepneys in Manila , People in Paddy fields , street kids playing in the citys . that kind of cultural stuff...Thanks again for the very valuable info it is appreciated.

Get a quote from Kerso, lots and lots of people have bought from him (inc me) and his prices are ultra competitive followed up by great service.

It is also an invoiced UK purchase so you get a proper warranty for both camera and lenses.
 
Thanks for all the advice, I am going to buy the 40D with 17-85 lens kit . I was going to give jessops a go , they are selling it for £950 but when I went in they said they had one in stock and proceeded to retrieve the camera out of the display cabinet which I refused to accept, I then emailed the help people on line and asked them if I reserved and collected online (discount code 40 quid!) would the camera be boxed and new and they told me it would be whatever is available in the shop and if that was a display camera then that would be it. I dont even think this is acceptable for a point and shoot but a DSLR is a no go surly?
Its a shame but I will hold on till march now so that I can avail the cashback....at least that gives me more to worry about:bonk:

Sorry to bore you guys but 900 quid is a big investment for me and I want to get it right.:)
 
I would echo getting a price from Kerso, you still get the cashback and warranty, plus you would be likely to save money.

Comley Cameras? I live on the Isle Of Wight but I can see where you are coming from;)
My uncle terry is the brother of the guy who founded comley cameras and my cousin has a camera shop in Louth but I cant remember the name of the shop, He would do me a good deal I am sure.

I'm going to type the same as I typed just now :D The Canon 40D is a very good camera and no mistake, but seriously, rob your child's piggy bank and stretch to the D300 - its a whole jump ahead!

If I hadn't invested in Canon lenses I'd be there right now...
