Firstly an apology if this is posted in the wrong section, also because you probably get asked this all the time...

Which camera would you recommend me buying? So far I have only had compact cameras - currently got a Nikon cool pix s3300.

Now I would like to take my love of taking pictures a little further.
I want to take pictures when I travel, and plus Blythe doll photography.

I think a camera that comes with no lenses however I can add them if and when I want to or or one with a basic lens would be best for me. I don't really have a budget as I am going to have to start saving soon however I don't really want to spend over £700.

Any suggestions greatly appreciated :)

For that kind of budget set aside for just the camera body. You can't really go too wrong.

Canon, Nikon, Sony etc will all give you very good image quality coupled with some good lenses.

It really will come down to you going into shops and just trying them ALL out. Explore each model and base your decision on how well you get on with the design and lay out.

I use a Sony A77 for 3 reasons. Super fast frames per second, simple button lay out and the fact I work for them. :)

Thank you for your response.

A friend suggested the Nikon D3100 to me, anyone know if this one is great for a beginner?

It might be great for your friend and not for you..

The best thing you can do is go and have a look. Never just take what someone says as it more than likely wont be what you think.

The 3100 is a decent little snapper.. though if you were looking to get as much as you can with that £700 budget, you can get much much more. Nikon d7000 is around that price now, canon 60d and either the sony a57 or a65. If you were looking to go second hand then you could get an a77 with the excellent 16-50mm lens .

I have the 3100 but just a few things on it what irritate me like no wireless remote and a few other things what should of bin on it but arnt .....great cam but as you get more in to your photograpy you will want more from it .....

Yes, it's great for a beginner and it has some good features over others, easy to use and full manual control when you want it, with £700, I'd probably go for a flashgun as well and the nice Nikon 35mm f1.8 lens and a nice tripod and you might even have enough for the 55-200mm VR lens that Nikon make.

If you wanted a full starter set up.. Then what Ivan has suggested, you won't go far wrong.

Have a read of some reviews of cameras in your price range. Reviews don't say everything but are a reasonable source of information.

For your budget you will be able to get a more than an entry level DSLR.

All makers produce some great cameras. Canon and Nikon have the vast majority of the market share but don't ignore the others.

I'm a bit biased because I own one but I think the current deal offered by SRS Microsystems of a Pentax K5 + the normal kit lens for £549 is excellent.

However, you need to go and handle some cameras to see what feels right for you.

Thanks everyone,

After reading some reviews I decided to buy the D3100. At the moment I am starting from the beginning and this camera sits my needs perfectly for now.
Luckily I can afford it now, plus it comes with a free Nikon camera bag and a lens :)

Thanks for replying!

Hi Amy!

Let me know how you get on the nikon! Ive just checked them out myself and its very well priced and I believe offers full hd video?

Im toying with either a 100 quid starter jobbie or somthing along the lines of the d3100/Canon 1100d

Mind me asking how much you paid?

If you want start photography on professional basis then in my opinion you can go for the Canon EOS Pro. And if it's just for hobby then you can whatever camera you like. It depends on you.

Personally, if I was just "getting into" photography and wanted a cheap introduction to DSLRs, I would look at 2nd hand shelves. A pre-loved D70/450D or similar should come in at around £100-£150 and a few quid more would see a kit lens on the front. Should the bug bite, you should be able to realise close to the purchase price on resale (or keep the starter kit as a backup) or simply sell up and out of the DSLR route if the bug doesn't bite so hard.

Agree. £150 gets a very usable DSLR with kit lens that will still give very good images.

I still like the images my 20D gave and that was almost 10 years old and they sell for under £100 now. Has all the functionality required to do DSLR 'stuff'

Hi, If you're as keen as you sound you're likely to out grow a D3100 quickly. The second hand market would be my advice to you, perhaps a slightly older body with a good quality second hand lens (maybe a F/F lens). That way when you feel ready to upgrade you won't lose as much cash and should you feel at a later date to go F/F your lenses will already be compatible.
