Which Camera???

Hi guys

My digital camera of the past two years finally bit the bullet last week, so to speak. As far as I can tell, there's a bit of dirt or dust gotten inside the lens somewhere. It is constantly visible on the viewing screen, blurry when zoomed out, and comes into focus when I zoom in.

There are no repair shops near where I stay, so I have decided it would just be as worthwhile buying a new camera.

My camera is a Casio EX-S880, 8mp pocket sized digital camera. Previously, I had another Casio Exilim, and both have served me very well for what I needed. Basic family/holiday/pub photo's, occasional photo's of my car/landscapes. Nothing too fancy.

The only thing that disappointed me about the Casio's were the lack of sound quality when playing back viedo's I'd taken at concerts/gigs - my Sony Ericsson phone out-performed my latest camera by a good margin in this area.
This would not be a deal-breaker, however it would be nice to have decent sound to go with the video's.

So, naturally, I started looking at more Casio camera's to replace mine, and came across a couple that I liked, that were within my budget (£80 - £130 ish).

I like the Z25 - very compact, simple button layout that is very similar to the one I have.

I also seen the Ex-S12 - around the same size as my current camera, with some newer features.

I am not too fussy on having the highest mp camera - 8mp was more than enough for what I will use it for, although the Casio's all have 3x Optical Zoom, which is not great, but seems to be what most camera's around this price have.

I bought my girlfriend a Samsung P45 for Christmas, and really like this. It definitely looks the part! So have been looking at a few Samsung's as well.

But, as always, there appears a cat amongst the pigeons - I came across the Fujifilm Finepix Z300 at a local shop. I really dig the looks of this camera, the internal lens add's to the compact-ness of the unit, and with 5x Optical Zoom, it definitely fits my criteria in that dept.

However, I am a little weary about the touchscreen options. So, I had a look online for some reivews, but alas, I cannot find any websites that give this camera a thorough review. All youtube video's seem to be in Japanese as well.

I have ran a search on this site, and came back with no results as well.

Does anyone have any advice/information on how well the touchscreen works on this camera? For instance, how quickly can I change between pictures and video? How easy are the functions to operate - remember I will be using this after a few drinks in the pub as well, so ease of use is important.

And lastly, can anyone make any other recommendations of sme camera's to look into?

Apologies for the lengthy post!

Cheers

Keir

Welcome to the forum.

To be honest i would hate to be in your shoes as there is such a huge choice! I have the Panasonic Lumix TZ6 which i love but is about £170ish. I like the look of the Nikons on their advert but never heard anyone say what they were like.

Check out some of my early images on my flickr for TZ6 samples.

The Panasonic TZ6 is a very good option if you can make that budget stretch, only difference between that and the TZ7 is the HD video which is probably one of the best compacts on the market at the moment. TZ6 also has capability of using optical zoom while using video (or it does on the TZ7, so making an assumption here).

TZ6 has 12x zoom and a 25mm leica lens!

Unfortunately, I really don't think I can stretch to as much as that - after looking at it, I wish I could, but I have other bits and pieces I need to buy - like birthday presents for the missus!!!

^^ Tell missus that if you were to get this camera you could capture all those special events like her Birthday in better quality and the pictures will be you present to her :)

Canon IXUS?

£125 on Amazon

I know the IXUS have a good rep, but I really don't like the way they look at all, and they ain't the smallest of camera's either!
