Which camera strap?

I need help choosing a new camera strap, the stock ones with my 1dmkII and 5D work but cut into my neck heavily badly. I need a new strap with a bit of padding, I would also like to have both cameras on just one strap with some kind of sliding/detachable fastening... if such a thing exists.

Anyone got any recommendations?

One word.... 'Optech' They really do considerably take the strain out of carrying heavy kit due to the elasticity in the straps.

Personally I can't do with my camera(s) hung round my neck (5D & 20D) so I went he way of the hand straps, find them very comfortable and doesnt get in the way all the time as the neck strap used to.

And just to be awkward ;) - I use both the Optech neckstrap and the Canon E1 Handstrap :) Can recommend both.

How does that work when carrying two cameras and needing to switch between them regularly. At the moment I end up with a sore around my neck and half strangling myself several times a day.

If out on a job (or shooting for fun) where I will need both cameras to hand I use my Crumpler bag (Geekstar) which allows for a quick in and out of cameras when I need to change.
Keeps one nice and safe in the bag just in case of an accident or inclement weather. Any other time I usually have my gear in a Lowe Pro but find the 'back pack' style of bag a pain to swap gear in a rush.
 
Totally off topic, but can I ask how much gear, or what type of gear you can pack in one of them Geekstars ?

Been indecisive about getting one of these for ages now and I just cant decide :thinking:

Well when full to the brim I usually have in:

5D + 24-105 attached
20D + 70-200 attached
17-40 lens
580 flash
plus rocket blower, filters, poleriser, batteries etc

The inside is very moveable and allows for a long compartment to put a camera and long zoom in there.

Thanks THX, I saw Seans review (thats what got me interested :) ) but wasnt certain how well it would hold a 70-200, particularly if/when attached to a camera :)
 
Yea there a flap that let you use the whole height of the bag so the body and lens can sit horizontal down the left hand side of the bag. In seans (secret compartment pic) pictures the end of the 70-200 would be where he has the 135L lens. If that makes sense?
 
For the strap I'd like to add my vote for the Optech (inparticular the Optech Pro).

Worth every penny.

Looks like Im going to be buying a Geekstar afterall ( should have bought the damn thing in the first place :bang: )

Hi - I bought an Optech "Classic" Strap for my D50 & found it to be a huge improvement over the Nikon "cheesewire" original - since investing in the D200 & some heavy duty glass I find the Classic slips off my shoulder (as it is just neoprene covered in nylon fabric) - do any of the better Optech straps have a more resilient (sp?) underside to stop this? (I'm sure I've seen a strap with rubber bobbles on the underside which would be perfect?)

Mine's an Optec too....lovely and padded with rubbery bobble things which are comfortable on the neck, but stop it slipping off your shoulder if you carry it that way. Not sure which flavour of Optec, but works well.
 
Yup I have the pro, and it has bobbles on the underside to stop any slippage.

Although I think it's the dogs bananas as a lens strap, I do find that after a while my neck starts to itch a little bit, or is it just me?
 
The Optech pro is a must buy, it spreads the weight perfectly, it's also quite elastic which absorbs a lot of the bouncing from walking or jogging to get that killer shot :D
 
Ok guys, ive now ordered an Optech Reporter strap... Thanks for all the help, ill let you know how I get on.
 
Optech reporter strap arrived 10mins ago and looks good...

OUCH... this post is just to prove that there are in fact 2x 8 oclocks in the day, ive never seen this one before, but I now know why.
 
I had a Lowepro Neoprene strap. It made the camera amazingly light and nice soft strap round neck....but because of the slight bouncing of the camera on the stretchy strap....the strap buckles kept sliding undone. :(
So now it is consigned to the bottom of the wardrobe.

I hope you enjoy your new optech strap..... i might have to get one! ;)
